it will help if you DO eat breakfast. Eat 5 or so smaller meals a day. The skinniest people I know graze almost constantly.

5. Therein lies the problem
Eat a bowl of special K for breakfast, or something similar, and your body won't horde lunch and dinner and pack it away for the duration. You'll lose weight.

When people say breakfast is important, they generally mean it.

59. Start with 10 miles a week then
Ride it in 2 mile increments. Then, when that seems like it isn't even work (For me, I don't even start to warm up until I hit mile 2, and I have had a stroke.)

Then, when 2 miles is nothing, go to 6. Do 3 rides like that a week. Then go for 10 miles a ride. By that time, you will be in good enough shape that 10 miles will not seem like much.

I understand that you are not well conditioned in the legs/butt area. Bicycling is the best possible activity for you for that very reason.

I can see how someone could see it as being in bad taste without knowing what I was referring to.

Well... I guess it's pretty tasteless anyway. No offense intended, though.

Also, just to keep the thread from getting too far off topic - Kleeb, try to build your muscles. That'll help you burn more fat when you DON'T have time to exercise.

PS. 12 oz. curls don't count, you little lush, you! :D

56. There are plenty of workouts you can do with a heart condition
Though I don't know the details of your condition, I think Tai-Chi, yoga and maybe Pilates are pretty safe. They'll raise your metabolism without overburdening your heart. Ask your doctor what would be ok.

need for about 60 bucks. It'll be the best money you ever spent. As soon as you build a bit of muscle you can burn off tons of fat. Seriously I've read before you're a young guy. Don't let people BS you and tell you you're fine the way you are. That kind of positive reenforcement is not what is best for you, you do not want to go through your coming of age fat. Contact me for further information I can give you a ton of reccomendations and specifics.

42. You won't hurt yourself if you start out slow. It's very foreign when you
first start doing it but after a while it's the greatest god damn thing. Seriously you can get a good weight bench that comes with a barbell and 2 dumbbells that you can interchange a bunch of weights that are also included all for about 60 dollars. All that you need other than that is some weight gloves that run around 15. I can E-Mail/personal message you a very simple routine or I can find one online that you can do and after a few workouts you memerize.

Or, although I didn't do this myself, you can join a gym. Are you located close to any gyms? They all offer beginners training programs to fit them, and they won't allow you to do something that will hurt you.

23. I used to weigh 215
When I was in high school. After I graduated, I stayed home for two weeks while my parents went to California. It never stopped raining. I became really depressed and ate when I felt I had to. When I got back, my mother noticed a difference and to prove I weighed the same, I went on the scale. 185. 30 lbs. I was amazed. Over the next year, I continued to lose weight by watching what I ate. I weigh 175 now, which is considered healthy.

You never know, man. Sometimes you lose weight without reason.

Those midnight snacks are saying something to you. If you get the urge to eat, stop for one second and think about it. Have a set of questions: why am I eating? Am I hungry? Could I be hungry for something that is not food?

I am not trying to play psychologist but I am going through the same process and I tell you it is roller coaster.

Play computer games instead of eating at midnight..that is a much healthier distraction.

25. The eileen from OH diet
Go as light as possible on breakfast & lunch. (I like one of those li'l individual bags of lowfat micro popcorn for lunch. Or a big ol' bowl of broccoli with lemon. I loooove broccoli.) If you drink coffee or tea with sugar and cream, gradually cut back until you're drinking it black.

Eat whatever you want for dinner - but cut waaaay back on your portion and when full, get up and leave the table. Yes, it may be rude if you are eating with someone else, but explain nicely. It is almost impossible to sit there, with food left on your plate and not continue to eat.

Switch from pop to iced tea that's either unsweetened or only has a leetle bit of sugar. Avoid diet pop - I swear that artificial crap does something hinky to your system that prevents weight loss.

No beer or have a one-day-a-week when you can have a few (mine's Friday). If you drink on the other days, make it a white wine spritzer, light on the wine, heavy on the spritzer (I like the no calorie slightly flavored club soda.)

What's your weakness? I couldn't care less about sweets and desserts, but I'm a sucker for salty/crunchy. I resist the potato chips (my downfall) and substitute the popcorn mentioned above.

I think diets, per se, don't work because you're obsessing about everything you eat. I approached in an almost casual manner and just started paying attention to what I was doing. Lost almost 30 lbs over 6 months and it just kinda fell off with no big deal effort. Have kept it off for 2 years by just weighing myself once a week or so (just to make sure it's not creeping back on).

Oh, and I'm over 50 and hate, hate, hate to exercise (unless it's walking in a cool city) and I'm a total slug in that regard.

good luck! Quit trying to "lose weight" and instead just cut out the stuff you can live without, and find an acceptable substitute for what you must have. And watch the portions!

53. Okay, so you know your weakness. ..
Which means you can more easily pass up on the bread, pasta, starchy, fatty, fried food IF you can have something sweet at the end of the meal. THEN, find some lowfat sweets you like -I love the fat free frozen yoghurt - chocolate brownie. (Okay, okay, I slightly lied about the sweet thing - I do love chocolate, but that desire seems to come in fits and spurts.)

(Psst. Don't tell the people above who told you to always eat breakfast - but I rarely eat it, either. Unless we go out and then my treat is my fave - bacon & eggs & whole wheat toast.)

I think the trick is to give up those foods that are high in calories and you are ambivalent about as a trade-off for having a low cal/fat alternative to the ones you love. OR even the real thing - in small doses.

Think of what you are eating as a series of trade-off and don't fall for the all or nothing approach (no carb, no fat, no/low calories). Find a mix of what works for you and I think you'll find that you won't feel deprived, you won't be obsessing about numbers, and the weight will come off - slow but steady, which is the best way.

Again, best of luck, and PM me if you want encouragement, advice, or pithy little notes!

eileen from OH

27. Hey...me, too! The good news is that, if you want to get to 185,
you've not got that far to go and your metabolism's probably youthful enough that you can get back there pretty quickly. The dietary tips herein are great, but I'd stress that you need to notch up some decent exercise to help the cause -- it'll benefit you in other ways, too.

And don't get paranoid about weight. At your height, 200 lbs is going to distribute itself pretty well and you're still ahead of most adult Americans (admittedly, that's not saying much) in body fat. Also remember that muscle weighs an awful lot more than fat...I know you're not a hulking muscledude now, but as you approach your 30s (and we do have a tendency to get there a lot faster than we got through our first couple of decades) you may very well increase muscle mass and so don't now get fixated on weight as a sole indicator of your condition.

Good luck, dude!

Correct me if I'm wrong. It's always better to be not overweight when you are coming into maturity. The sooner he learns how to stay trim the better. First of all for the emediate social life/confidence issues, and secondly it will be physically easier for him to stay in better shape and attain his preffered body if he becomes an adult without too much excess bulk and cellulite

47. Sorry about that. Here are a couple of other quick tips
Edited on Sun May-30-04 03:03 PM by Bombtrack
Water: I know you've probably heard it but it is big. Because water costs alot, buy a Brita filter pitcher from CVS or someplace and during all of your meals and snacks even if you have another beverage POUND water. You will fill up alot faster. Even if you have to pee alot it's well worth it.

Also always have gum so if you know you've already had alot of calories for that day or couple of days control yourself with some gum. I prefur orbit because it lasts for so long.

Figure out what relativly healthy foods you can put up with and eat it more often(not more helpings of it, but instead of other meals). And never have all carbs meals. IE, no spagetti, bread, and milk. If you don't like salad, find stuff that you can put in to make salads you like. Such as some shredded chedder cheese and shredded chicken with ranch dressing.

And you will have more energy throughout the day if you do pushups and situps when you wake up before you hit the shower. It will wake you up way better than being half asleep for the first hour of the day and drinking coffee. It might sound impossible on paper but you can make yourself do it. Seriously it will give you energy by waking up your muscles and getting your blood going and your body won't crave food energy because of it. I know I'm not putting it exactly in the right medical terminology but I hope I'm getting the gist across.

50. I edited it and added some more. But you don't need a specific amount
of water a day. But just to get into the habit of being a water drinker and having it around. If you're sipping on water with that water bottle, you'll be far less likely to look for that snack. The 6 glasses a day, 8 glasses a day requirment numbers are sort of BS, but that much definetly isn't a bad thing. So when you're at school you can just have a bottle and keep refilling it at the water fountain, and when you're at home you can just keep refilling it with the pitcher. And the other person bashed diet soda. I disagree with that. If you're going to drink any drink it should be diet and if you're going to drink soda it should be diet. It's dumb to waist your calorie count(did I mention it's not bad to look at calorie counts) on beverages. I personally don't drink any beverage that has calories other than milk(which I don't drink that much of unless I'm eating a brownie or something) or booze, which I limit as well. When you "drink"-drink , as I've read you do, and there's nothing wrong with that unless you get out of control, and you have a choice you should go with vodka which has no carbs and few calories.

55. I get the implication he's not too toned/muscular from his comments
I may be wrong of course. If he had even a light/casual workout routine he wouldn't have a fat ass. Beleive me if he takes my advice and starts lifting a little bit he will not think I was overreacting in my advice. It is never a bad thing for a guy to have some guns and a toned midsection

57. not a problem at all
I dont work out because of my heart condition, I do however underestimate my strength. I didnt overreact, just corrected you on my age, I sounded concerned about working out because I have a heart condition.

62. oh, ok. I think other people sounded like I was overreacting
I wasn't saying you were overreacting. If you do have one, I'm sure your doctor would be delighted to know you were interested in some kind of plan though. I won't delve too deep, but I predict that there is something safe yet effective for you to do. Whether it be aerobic or involving resistance or whatever.

45. It's America and we are not skinny people
Don't worry about it as long as you are happy and healthy.

49. Don't worry
It is a good moment to take action. I took action when I was approaching 90 kg: the FDH principle (= Friss die Hälfte = Munch the Half: ), regular workouts and using my bike (and buttermilk instead of candy bars ;-)). The result is that I got down to 70 kg and kept that weight for three years now.

So, don't worry - you can do it. It isn't important, the only important things is that you're comfortable and healthy.

Sorry about patronizing, I just don't know what else to type .

:hi:

64. Are you still growing?
If you are, don't worry about losing weight, just try to maintain your weight. Even if you've stopped gaining height, people often grow their frame a bit into their midtwenties which is why weight charts are for people 25 and older.

65. yeah you could be still growing Kleeb, like I am
I feel that at 6 foot 4, and being only 21, I have another good growth spurt in me :D.

But in all seriousness, I was 17 when I shot up from 5'11" to 6'4"
