Are there any American shows which are anti-establishment?
Edited on Thu Aug-21-03 07:49 PM by HypnoToad
The British, to name two, have "Doctor Who" and "Blake's 7". The former had several stories dedicated to the Doctor wiping out oppressive and backwards regimes (I wish he'd show up now, man...) and the 3rd Doctor (early on at least) was as anti-establishment as they come! And "Blake's 7" was about a group of political rebels out to put an end to a very sinister regime (unlike Dr Who which was a bit more fantasy, the rebels of B7 lost....)

Not to forget "The Prisoner", which despite the one anti-computer episode is still television genius...

I can't think of any American shows which are anti-establishment. Of course, there's Star Trek and its numerous boring offspring, all of which are anti-anti-establishment (though Kirk would destroy civilizations which he didn't agree with, but those civilizations he toppled were always ran by computers for some reason, how more trite and lame and stereotypically 60s "we're afraid of the computers" can we get?! :eyes: "Return of the Archons" and "The Apple" are clear examples of this!)

1. That 70s show
pretty radical: free sex by teens and plenty of drug use

2. Pale by comparison!
It's only parroting, if not camping up how life was in the 70s.

I mean something anti-establishment with guts and gusto that addresses issues. I still can't think of anything...

5. The Daily Show
is the only show (besides South Park) that's fairly subversive nowadays. In it's prime "Roseanne" was brutally honest, until it became unwatchable.

6. Farscape and Firefly were both pretty subversive
But Farscape was killed by the Sci-Fi Channel (after going downhill for its last two seasons) and Firefly was never even given a chance.

Science fiction is normally a good bet for anti-establishment attitudes (except for Star Trek) -- but I gather that in next fall's line-up, the only sf consists of future cop shows and future lawyer shows. Blech.

I'm hoping that Pirates of the Caribbean may spark some shows about the joys of being an honorable outlaw -- but I'm not holding my breath.

Meanwhile, I tend to watch anime instead. Lots of good subversiveness there.
