Jelly Belly Saddened by the Passing of Ronald Reagan
FAIRFIELD, CA (June 6, 2004)---The candymaking family and employees of Jelly Belly Candy Company were saddened to learn of the passing of Ronald Reagan and sent their heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Reagan and his children.

"I greatly admired Mr. Reagan and the leadership he brought to this country and the world. He leaves an unparalleled legacy in world affairs. His interest in our candy certainly had a profound effect on us," said Herman G. Rowland, Sr., chairman of the board of Jelly Belly Candy Company.

The company came to Mr. Reagan's attention during his term as Governor of California when he ate jelly beans to help him stop smoking. His love of Jelly Belly beans continued during his terms in the White House.

In his own words:
"You can tell a lot about a fellow by his way of eating jelly beans." -- Ronald Reagan

3. What a warm and touching human quality
a love for jelly beans. One might go so far as to say he loved jelly beans more than people.

4. How many ways are there to eat jellybeans anyway?
You tell something about someone by how they toss bitsize candies in their mouth? Geesh after reading that and the recap of his Presidency I have lost all the respect for him that I did have.

8. If you haven't read the quickchange link do
Very lengthening but in (gulp) bitesize chunks. I was a young lion back in those days so I didn't pay attention as much as I do now.

Scary and sad.

5. I hope this isn't a swipe at jellybean eaters-
they helped me quit smoking (even though I just relapsed).

9. That is a seriously great quote by FDR
And it's 100% true. But yeah, Reagan is nowhere near FDR's status as Great Presidents of All time.

10. Ronald Reagan made Jelly Belly
Some of you kids may not remember that you couldn't always get Jelly Bellies in little bags at the supermarket. When they came out they were a "gourmet" product sold only at high-class candy counters.

I remember (strokes his long white beard, leans forward on his cane) the Crescent department store in Spokane had them. It was one of the nicest department stores in town, with the very best stuff, and you could only get them there--for almost four dollars a pound. Which at the time was outrageous--regular jelly beans were a dollar fifty a pound. Because, you see, no one but the fancy kids knew anything about Jelly Bellies. All the kids at Gonzaga Prep ate Jelly Bellies. No one else ate them because their moms would have died of heart attacks upon learning that You Were Eating Four Dollar Jelly Beans!

Then came Reagan, and suddenly everyone wanted the jelly beans the president ate. Next thing you know they have a second factory and they're selling Jelly Bellies in convenience stores.

If anyone needs to mourn Reagan, it's Jelly Belly.
