couldn't play bass, but an artist in every sense of the world nonetheless. Another genius whose time was cut short.

7. the black saxophone player
I think he played sax. He was kicked out for some reason and they redubbed songs such as "She loves you" so that you couldn't hear his singing. what was his name?

11. John
I liked his humor and his voice. Most of my very favorite Beatle songs were "John songs". I did identify with Paul too though, because he was lefthanded and had that cool bass guitar.

I love his sarcastic, dry and oh so subtle sense of humor. Favorite George song?(Beatle song, not solo song) Another tight call, but "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" wins out.

15. Paul, the most misunderstood one
The one who tried to keep it together while John and George bitched. Also, the most professional of the bunch, and the one who was truly the revolutionary of the band with backwards tape loops and differing sounds.

Can't forget also that he was the one who fought the appointment of Allen Klein to control the Apple finances. Paul sued the other three, but it was to be for their betterment. Paul always said that none of the others ever thanked him for it, although they would have lost much more money from the criminal Klein.

17. It is difficult to choose, but I pick Paul. I guess I love
the ballads he wrote. My favorite song by him when he was with the Beatles is probably Hey Jude.

My favorite Lennon tune is "In My Life"
My favorite Ringo song "Octopus' Garden" (I know, I know)
My favorite George song is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

18. you're absolutely right about Paul...
being the one responsible for bringing avant-garde elements into the Beatles. Everyone assumes this was John's doing (maybe because John went to art school?) I assume Paul was able to see right through Yoko's secondhand hucksterism.

31. That's one of the annoying misconceptions about the Beatles...
that John was the 'artistic' one and that the only thing Paul wrote was "Yesterday" (to borrow from John's later "How Do You Sleep?"). Just look at the songs that paul wrote, and the work that he did in the studio, and the truth becomes apparent. They were both great, but Paul was the backbone of the group - this was especially obvious at the end - and his professionalism and ambition is all that kept them together. It's also what contributed to the perception of him as somehow not-as-cool-as-John.

John was extremely self-indulgent and it did get in the way of his music more than once. Paul was a go-getter. George was quietly getting along until his own ambition kicked in. Ringo wa shappy just to be a Beatle. I can't pick a favorite. It'd probably come down to John or Paul. John, by his own admission, could be a nasty SOB. Still, I have a feeling that I'd have gotten along fine with the dude if I'd known him on a personal basis because his sense of humor and a few other attributes might mesh with my nature. Maybe more so than would be true of Paul, who I've heard nothing but good things about. Who knows. As a live performer, though, I'd imagine that Paul would have blown John out of the water even had John lived longer and returned to the concert stage....

I'm sad too now, dammit. Okay, fave (Beatle) songs include If I Needed Someone and Something. He's my fave because
1. I have a weakness for guitarists
2. I like his songs best
3. He seemed the nicest
4. I like his solo work best

Today I voted for George. Wonderwall Music was the inspiration, plus he seemed to be a really interesting human being. On another day it will be another Beatle and another reason.

35. Paul, but ...
Edited on Fri Jul-11-03 03:58 PM by MamaBear
Okay, okay, so as a hysterical 8th grade honor student I went crazy  for Paul. I love his work on the bass; when I became a bass player myself I bought a copy of The Beatles Scores and started to discover just how good he was.

But some of my favorite songs (like Something, and If I Needed Someone, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps) point me to George. I too thought Wonderwall music was a great effort.

And John -- who was able to express just about everything one could feel in a song.

Who could not love Ringo?

One vote for Paul; one vote for each. Gotta dig out the White Album tonight, for old time's sake ... and Revolver ... and Abbey Road ... and Rubber Soul ...

On edit: I probably should have said George Martin, who had the knowledge and taste to guide them.

Partially because we're both known as "quiet ones" and he's one of the best guitar players ever. My favorite song sung/written by him is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" or "If I Needed Someone." (I love the harmonies at the end!)
