Poll question: What is your favorite Monkees tune?
Since they did do their own vocals and instrumentals later and everything else that was discussed in that thread. Thank you.

1. I have two...
"Let's Dance On" and "Gonna Buy Me a Dog."

The Monkees was my favorite show when I was 2 years old. My brother bought the albums so I could dance around the house. We had the album just called "The Monkees," and both these songs are on it.

They both make me happy, remind me of being little.

4. The Porpoise Song
(or what happens when you spike teen idols' Kool Aid with LSD)

My, my the clock in the sky is pounding away
There’s so much to say
A face, a voice, an overdub has no choice
And it cannot rejoice

Wanting to be, to hear and to see
Crying to the sky

But the porpoise is laughing good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye

Clicks, clacks
Riding the backs of giraffes for laughs is alright for a while
The ego sings of castles and kings and things
That go with a life of style

Wanting to feel, to know what is real
Living is a lie

But the porpoise is waiting good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye

7. Wow, I had forgotten how much I loved the monkees.
I had completely forgotten 'Valeri'. I can't remember how it goes now, but I remember that was one of my faves.

8. Shades of Gray sung by Peter and Davy
When the world and I were young,
Just yesterday.
Live was such a simple game,
A child could play.
It was easy then to tell right from wrong.
Easy then to tell weak from strong.
When a man should stand and fight,
Or just go along.

But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.

I remember when the answers seemed so clear
We had never lived with doubt or tasted fear.
It was easy then to tell truth from lies
Selling out from compromise
Who to love and who to hate,
The foolish from the wise.

But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.

It was easy then to know what was fair
When to keep and when to share.
How much to protect your heart
And how much to care.

But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.
Only shades of gray.

9. Goin' Down
Sock it to me...

Floatin’ down the river
With a saturated liver
And I wish I could forgive her
But I do believe she meant it
When she told me to forget it
And I bet she will regret it
When they find me in the morning wet and drowned
And the word gets ’round
Goin’ down
Goin’ down

Coming’ up for air
It’s pretty stuffy under there
I’d like to say I didn’t care
But I forgot to leave a note
And it’s so hard to stay afloat
I’m soakin’ wet without a boat
And I knew I should have taken off my shoes
It’s front page news
Goin’ down
Goin’ down

I wish I had another drink
It wouldn’t be so hard to sink
I should have taken time to think
Besides I got the picture straight
She must have had another date
I didn’t need this extra weight
I wish that I could see the way to shore
Don’t want no more
Goin’ down
I’m goin’ down

And now I see the life I led
I slept it all away in bed
I should have learned to swim instead
And now it’s really got me stumped
I can’t believe why I jumped
I’d like to get my tummy pumped
I can’t believe they drink this stuff in town
This dirty brown
Goin’ down
Goin’ down

I wish I looked before I leaped
I didn’t know it was so deep
Been down so far I don’t get wet
Haven’t touched the bottom yet
This river scene is gettin’ old
I’m hungry, sleepy, wet and cold
She told me to forget it nice
I should have taken her advice
I only want to go on home
I’d gladly leave that girl alone
What a way to spend the night
If I don’t drown, I’ll die of fright
My pappy taught me how to float
But I can’t swim a single note
He threw me in to teach me how
I stayed there floatin’ like a mama cow
And now I’ve floated way down stream
I know this has to be a dream
If I could find my way to shore
I’d never, never do this anymore
I’ll give you three, I’ve been down nine
I’m goin’ down just one more time.
Goin’ down.
Goin’ down.

Now the sky is gettin’ light
An everything will be alright
Think I finally got the knack
Just floatin’ here lazy on my back
I never really liked that town
I think I’ll ride the river down
Just movin’ slow and floatin’ free
There’s a river swingin’ under me.
Waving back to the folks on shore
I should have thought of this before
I’m floatin’ on down to new orleans
Goin’ to pick up on some swingin’ scenes
I know I’ll know a better day
I’ll go down groovin’ all the way
Goin’ down
Goin’ down

10. The Monkees were vastly underrated.
Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 08:33 AM by mac56
Yeah, they used studio musicians. So what? So did the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, the Byrds - sometimes the same musicians as played on the Monkees sessions - and how about all those Motown groups?! It was the 60's, folks.

*End of rant*

Favorite Monkees songs:

"Take A Giant Step"
"The Girl I Knew Somewhere"
"Sometime In The Morning"
"Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)"
"A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"
"Pleasant Valley Sunday"
"Words"
Everything on "Headquarters"
"D. W. Washburn"
"Goin' Down"
"Tapoica Tundra"
"Good Clean Fun"
"Listen To The Band"
"Ditty Diego"

Good thread!

11. Papa Genes blues
I liked a lot of the Nesmith material... pre, during and post Monkees. I still follow his work and listen to his music all the time.
I really liked the Monkees also. I purchased both DVD box sets of both seasons of the show. They still crack me up after all this time.

12. Last Train
I've always liked this song. And from the misheard lyrics file...
I always thought "we’ll have time for coffee flavored kisses, and a bit of conversation" was "we’ll have time for coffee flavored kisses and a *bitter* conversation." Until a few months ago, actually. :dunce:
