Super Audio CDs (SACD) - Is there a Big Difference?
Normal CDs are recorded using pulse code modulation with data that is captured at 16 bit depth 44,100 times a second.

SACDs are recorded using Direct Stream Digital with data that is captured at 1 bit 2,800,000 times a second.

CD output uses two channels.
SACD output uses 6 channels.

So, is the sounds really that much better?
I ask you....

1. Yep.
Just the addition of being able to listen in Surround is worth it, IMHO. Naturally, it will only sound as good as yours ears can hear, but......

Of course, nothing beats a fresh piece of vinyl. But nothing last forever, especially vinyl.

3. Will they play..
on a regular DVD player with DTS 5.1 digital audio output? Or require a certain CD player?

6. No, you need an actual SACD player.
DVD-Audio discs will play on a regular DVD player but only in stereo unless it is DVD-Audio compatible.

4. depends on your system i suspect....
and your speakers etc etc.....

for example i once ripped an mp3 at 256 bitrate and it sounded better played through pc speakers in that format than it did direct from CD...go figure that one

5. Huge difference!
I have both an SACD and a DVD Audio player. Frankly, I love them both and I think they combine the best elements of CD and Vinyl and then some. I have Fleetwood Mac's Rumours on DVD-Audio and it's just bliss. One of my favorite albums got even better. SACD is fantastic too.

8. Well....
I have more DVD-Audios than SACDs, but some of the albums I've listened to in SACD format are:
Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow
Keb Mo's Door
and REM's Out of Time.

There's not a whole lot of selection out right now, but hopefully that will change soon.

9. Sounds soooooooo much better
I just purchased an SACD player a month ago because I had to listen to Dark Side of the Moon with a 5.1 surround mix. You would have to be almost deaf to not hear the difference in quality. When you listen to an SACD, it's like your stereo system has been magically transformed into some $50,000 hi fi setup.

I already owned a DVD-Audio player but the titles available are scarce, and there are lots more SACD titles in comparison. If you are looking to get into SACD i highley recommend it. Likewise with DVD-Audio. Personally I think i like DVD-audio better. There is something that is hard to put into words as to why I prefer it ...the best I can come up with is that it has more "warmth" to me. This is especially true for me with the DVD-a 5.1 surround mixes vs the SACD surround mixes I have heard.

BEWARE, however that once you listen to high resolution music, your regular cd's will never, ever, sound the same to you. They will sound compressed and lifeless. You'll be buying your music collection all over again.
