Dogs: Housetraining
Well, I have done such a fine job of housetraining my dog that now he will only poop for one member of the family, ME! He has done great and doesn't go in the house, but all the other people living in the house are getting off the hook. Any suggestions?

1. Have someone else take him out
in the morning. When he doesn't poop, have them take him out an hour later or so. Keep going until he does (I didn't say it would be easy).

2. How old?
We finally learned through a training class to use key words to make our beagle poop. Specifically - GO POOP, MARGE!

3. He is 7 months old and I think
I need to get everyone to have more patience and co-operate more. I like "Go Poop" a lot. My Kids have taken to "FOR CHRISTS' SAKE WILL YOU CRAP ALREADY!!" I think "GO POOP, LOUIE" has a much sweeter ring to it.

Did I do that acroymn right? Dogs are not an exact science, obviously. Takes time, give it time!

6. Our Command Is A Little More Subtle ... It's "HURRY UP!"
So if there's mixed company around, it's less embarrassing for me (and for my dog too... she's so sensitive and private).

8. I've heard other commands such as

"Do your business!" or "Get busy!"

I like the one a friend of mine has for his seeing Eye Dog. It's
"Juno, PARK!"

Park? Parallel, head in or just anywhere? Heeheehee!

4. While we're on the subject I have a related question...
(instead of starting another thread)

As you may guess from my question, I'm no expert on this either...

Buddy, my new (to me) beagle is housebroken really well, and I haven't had a single problem with that yet, but he doesn't seem to like pooping in the yard either. He used to hardly ever get walks, and was used to going in my grampa's yard, but with me now he holds it in and waits for a walk (maybe because he's figured out he's going to have 3 or more walks a day now?), and then (here's the funny part) he seems to prefer pooping on things, instead of just on the grass or the sidewalk, which would be much easier for me to scoop up in the plastic bag I carry with me. By pooping on things I mean ferns, fences, the wheel of a bike that some child left in the park, etc.

Any ideas how I can convince him that it's ok to go in the yard, and how to gently encourage him to just go in a patch of grass instead of the low branch of a pine tree? I've been averse to manhandling him away from his "target" when he's about to go, because I don't want him thinking it's a bad idea for him to go while we're out for a walk.

While I'm asking, does anyone know a good way to train him to just poo straight into the plastic bag?

5. This is what I did with Louie and
Edited on Fri Jun-18-04 09:48 PM by madaboutharry
it has worked beautifully (except of course for the problem explained above). I took him to the particular place in the yard where I want him to go and just stood there in one spot. We just stayed there, and he was only allowed the area his leash would allow him. Now, that is his spot. He makes a beeline for it. I am really pleased. He pees for anyone, but I don't like him pooping exclusively for me.

10. My 9 week old Westie is so completely paper trained that...
he holds it in while outside and waits until he's safely back inside and on his paper!

First thing in the morning, I carry him outside and wait...

And wait...

And wait.

Sometimes half an hour.

He seems so proud that he can hold it in until he's back on his beloved paper!

Another thing...

Why does he want to eat his poop?

Nasty!
