Earl Scruggs Is God.

1. He created the World the night He first played on the Grand Ole Opry with Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys.

2. Everybody in the audience had a religious experience that night and He was worshipped.

3. Discuss.

1. No argument here
Earl Scruggs is a deity I could believe in. Moreso than Yahweh.

15. I am daft as a chosen profession, Sir.
And desperate altogether, yet secure in the Faith that Bluegrass comes from somewhere in Sligo.

Slainte!

3. It was REVEALED unto me, kentuck!
He walked on WATER at the Ozark Mountain Folkfair in Eureka Springs back in '73. Then, he turned the water into weed!

Verily, lightning sprang from his fingerpicks.

Glory Hialeah!

4. Earl is DA MAN!!
What a hoss! You want to hear pure FIRE, listen to the old cuts of Earl doing Pike County Breakdown or Ground Speed. Every banjo player on the planet owes a huge debt to Earl.

The power of Earl's banjo rivals, yea surpasses! that of The Clenis!

I became one of The Earl's disciples some thirty years ago. I was hooked on Earl's banjo before I ever got hooked on bluegrass. I was listening to Earl & Lester before I ever knew who Bill Monroe was. I hope to meet him and shake his hand (that BLACK BELT RIGHT HAND!) before either one of us dies.

9. Verily!
I have been baptized in the FIRE that is Earl's banjo! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of The Earl!

What is seldom discussed except among the Disciples is that Earl is a mighty fine guitarist as well. His guitar work on tunes from the canon like Preachin' Prayin' Singin' is second to none.

18. Whatever happened to Lester?
My mother used to listen to something by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs back in the sixties--what records did they have out then? I don't remember much of anything but those names . . .

22. Lester Flatt died in 1979. He and Earl parted less than amicably, I fear.

That's Lester on the right, inventor of the famous Flatt G-run on guitar, which lives to this day.

Look for something like "Flatt & Scruggs' Greatest Hits", making SURE it's got "Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms" and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."

CRANK your stereo as loud as you can take it and get ready for every hair on your body to stand straight up.

24. For the pure Earl banjo, get the Foggy Mountain Banjo album
I wore out my vinyl version of that one, working for endless hours with The First Book of Earl (aka "Earl Scruggs and the Five-String Banjo," with transcriptions of Earl's solos by Bill Keith) to get the rolls, the notes, just right.

13. Earl. Monroe. The third one is up for grabs.
Maybe Chubby Wise.

There can be no debate about the first two slots. Was there ever a more perfect lineup than the classic Blue Grass Boys? Monroe, Lester Flatt, and The Earl? That, children, is when Bluegrass was crystallized into its purest essence, that most perfect of musical forms.

The First Book of Earl is indeed as Holy a Tome as the Prophet Monroe's take on THE TONES. And the Fiddle is a YEARNING for the Bagpipes. Let us now rise and resonate to The Great Bill's "Scotland!"

25. had the pleasure of meeting Earl around 1974 or 75. . .
when we booked the Earl Scruggs Review to play at the college I was attending . . . what a great guy . . . and the music he was making during this period was exceptional . . . you can get a really good sampling on this CD; great, great stuff . . . (it's an import, though, so on the expensive side) . . .

Amazon.com Review
Many fans were astonished when banjo legend Earl Scruggs split with longtime partner Lester Flatt, left traditional bluegrass behind, enlisted sons Gary, Randy, and Steve, and assembled this eclectic, talented, rock-influenced ensemble. Included in the eye-popping list of guests: Byrds Clarence White and Roger McGuinn; acoustic standouts Vassar Clements and Josh Graves; country stars Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings; and miscellany including Billy Joel (yes, him), Alvin Lee, Charlie Daniels, Tracy Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Bramlett, David Allen Coe, Doug Kershaw, Loudon Wainwright III, and even the Pointer Sisters. The material is just as diverse: Flatt and Scruggs chestnuts; Jimmie Rodgers; Dolly Parton; Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie; Hank Williams; Elton John and Bernie Taupin; Rod Stewart; Joel; Wainwright; Cash; and four Dylan tunes, including a positively bubbly version of "I Shall Be Released." Sometimes this bluegrass-country-rock-soul-folk-gospel olio works to perfection, sometimes it's a bit messy, and sometimes it's just plain odd, but it's always infused with precise picking, a light-hearted enthusiasm, and rolling-thunder momentum. --Marc Greilsamer
