Why doesn't my modem work?
I have a used computer that came with a network card
and network software -Windows 2000.
I pulled the network card and installed a dial up modem.
The modem does not work. What?

1. It is working, otherwise...
...you wouldn't be able to post here.

You probably just need the right driver for the modem - that's my guess.

1. Install modem.
2. Install drivers. (if drivers for your specific modem are not available, select generic 56K drivers, or, if it's a US Robotics/3Com modem, select Courier 56K).
3. Open "Network Options". Create new dial-up networking connection to your ISP. Under "Connect using:" select the modem. Make sure the protocol is set to TCP/IP. Go into TCP/IP settings and set the DNS and so on appropriately for your ISP. (Also, if there was an open PCI slot, removing the network card was unnecessary.)

9. Go into Control Panel.

Click on "Add New Hardware". Let Windows look for the modem. If it doesn't find it, select "modem" from the list of devices. Then the manufacturer and model, if you know it (if you don't try "generic 56K").

You DID install the hardware in Windows after you physically put the modem in the PCI slot, right?

11. Okay...
move the drivers (should be *.inf files, although it may be an executable) to a folder on the desktop and point to that folder when Windows asks for the drivers during the install process.

15. Okay...
maybe the PCI slot is bad. Try moving the modem to a different slot.
