Hey, cigar smokers:
I'm going shopping for cigars for the party this morning; anyone have any faves in the not-too-expensive category? I'm just picking up a fistful, as they have been requested, and frankly I'm completely uneducated.

On edit: I'm splurging on the sippin' tequila, my fave Corazon's anejo. Wholesales at $85/bottle, if you can imagine such a thing. That's a whole night's tips at the restaurant. :)

24. heaven in a snifter
Beats Chinaco by a mile, and Patron by several miles. About once a year I get my hands on some... it's for the "pros", e.g. anyone still up at 10 or so. :)

2. Um...what do you consider "not-too-expensive"?
I smoke cigars so rarely that when I do I like to indulge myself and get a good one, so I don't mind spending $15-25 on a single cigar...I'd advise you to go with Dominican or Honduran. Partagas are good, so are Macanudos...and you can find cigars from both labels in the under-$10 range for singles. (Not too much under $10, though.)

15. I've been intrigued by some of the Cuban cigarettes..
Cohiba, Romeo y Julieta, Partagas, etc...but not enough to spend money on any. I just don't like dark tobacco in cigarettes. My experiences with Ducados and Gauloises convinced me of that. Think I'll stick with my Turkish Yenidje.

are the Indonesian djarums, but they give me a headache if I smoke them too much - I guess its all the cloves!

21. Shouldn't smoke those too much, anyway...
they can make your lungs bleed if you smoke them regularly... (but then I don't think I've ever known anyone who DID smoke 'em regularly).

27. I think there's a constituent of clove oil...
that can damage the lung if inhaled. Although you have to smoke ten to twenty clove cigarettes a day for a week or so to reach a point of pulmonary haemorrhage, I think...so you've likely nothing to worry about...

14. Fonseca cigars are very pleasant, sort of medium bodied, and very
friendly to infrequent or new cigar smokers. Also, if you're doing indoor smoking at this soiree, they're not too annoying smelling. (some cheap cigars STINK, even when they don't taste so bad. The best cigars have such a bouquet you don't even want to waste it by smoking them outside.)

You might be able to find a good deal on Hoyo de Monterrey, but I only recommend the Excalibur series (you'll see it on the on the cigar band), which might jack the price a wee bit.

For golf, I buy bundles of El Rey Del Mundo, especially the maduro (dark colored) ones.

Bock Y Ca are really enjoyable and you can get 'em for a song!

16. Romeo and Juliet is nice smoke
I smoke Ashton's, a good "middle of the road" cigar.

Since you are unfamilar with cigars, ask the tobacconist for a mild cigar. This will ensure that the smokers won't be overpowered with a verly strong one.

Where's the party?

25. Ashton was my first smoke! ahhhhh..... too mild, tho, so I went to a
Davidoff Mouton Cadet #1. Man, that smoke was thick as a milkshake, and just as tasty! Smoked it until with every pull I could feel my face gettting greener and greener, and even then I kept going until I burnt my fingers. Coupled it with a lovely snifter of cognac. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have attempted it on an empty stomach. But boy oh boy what a beautiful beginning to a lovely relationship.

That being said, Ashton's are considered premium or super premium cigars, and will be too pricey for this fellow's venture.

29. Not an easy task... cigars are like women
Everyone has the thing that appeals to them. What one person likes, another can find completely repulsive.

You have to know the person to know what kind of cigars they like. Cigars range from mild and tasteless to knock-you-over strong with a mouthful of assorted flavors.

If you're just looking for something that's acceptably good and not too expensive, look no further than the Punch London Club natural. It's only about $1.50 each and even someone who likes stronger cigars will enjoy it, but someone who's a little on the wimpier side won't get knocked over by it.

30. Some of my faves
Most can be found in the $5-10 range, if that's what you mean by not too expensive.

La Gloria Cubana Maduro Wavell - A dark and powerful little smoke, short and stubby, but full of heavy flavors. Some hints of chocolate, licorice, and peat.
Romeo y Julieta Cedros - They come in either the #1 (a little larger) or the smaller #2. This is medium bodied, natural wrapper. It has a very full predominately herbal (cedar) flavor with a leafy flavor secondary.
Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur - Many sizes to choose from. A very good quality smoke, always consistent and a prefect draw. Medium bodied with an earthy, slightly spicy taste with just a faint hint of cinnamon.
Padron 3000 - A medium bodied cigar with a proficient amount of smoke. Very good construction and even burn. A nice blend of earthy and nutty flavor.
El Rey del Mundo - A medium to full bodied smoke. Beautiful dark, oily wrapper. A very noticeable nutty flavor with a hint of peat and faint cocoa. It also gets better and better toward the finish.
Ashton - A mild to medium smoke. Not terribly exciting or complex, but a nice peppery flavor if you're in the mood for something different.
