Visual basic compiler?
Hiya. I wrote some VBS scripts to help out with a problem at work.

Unfortunately, thanks to how the registry is designed, what I want to do will only run EXE files.

So I need to get Visual Basic and re-code my scripts (a 10 minute task, I should think - this is extremely simple stuff).

Anybody know where I can get a free VB or VB-like compiler? My organization can't afford it and it's ridiculous, the nonsense I've had to go through with trying to get official help...

Thx!

(as an aside...does NO ONE search Google if they can ask on a message board first? This confuses me...)

7. WRONG, Trajan...
I'm happy with just hints and pointers, please don't put words in my mouth. O8)

The whole story is a strange one and is technically our of my domain... I'm just pissed at peoples' mindsets at the workplace. They spout bullshit about "teamwork" but then when you start offering project ideas and initiatives, they all royally love it until you ask them to do something because they have the product you need and you don't. I'm in PC support division, not a full fledged programmer, though my education gave me the ability to think through the process which is partly why I figured out VBS so easily. VBS is also free... I needed assistance from the programming staff because they have the compiler and the full program suite (remember, the code has to be a compiled EXE file rather than the VBS script). I've already did the brainy work and documented every line in the code (something I hate doing), all they need to do is look at the VB code that replaced VBS code. I e-mailed one guy with what needed to be done, he in turn forwarded me to a VB programmer who asked for clarification... Maybe 20 minutes just to replace VBS-centric script with VB code and compile it. So what does everybody say? "My department won't do it, the other one should because it's for them so go ask them." So I go ask them. "Well, uh, um, those are actually clever ideas, but VBS can't be ran under a compiler, uh, um it has to be programmed in VB... the best thing to do would be to get your own copy of Visual Basic that's $500 even though I am the VB programmer who does this for a living." (DARN IT, I said what had to be done in the e-mail - TWICE. Now they're playing ignorant on me, what nerve!! x( )

Why I decided not to give up on them is beyond me. I had to explain the whole situation not once but TWICE, in agonizing detail. Good grief, if I can think of this stuff, why the hell can't they?! Don't they read? (seems the problem is not just mine...) Sheesh, I helped them out in the past and never even got a 'thank you' for taking the fucking INITIATIVE!

Also, please don't give me this insulting bull shit that I'm stupid and need everybody else to do the work for me. x( I'm clearly capable and I'm fucking tired of being being pushed around in this shithole of a world that's the opposite of what it claims to be.

6. Envelop might not do it
Envelop is a clone of Visual Basic THREE. A nice piece of work, but VBScript is based on VB5/6.

If you're working in VBScript, you should probably get a copy of Visual Basic 6. You can compile with it.

But also, be aware that there are a few minor differences between VBScript and VB executable code. So RTFM is essential.

PowerBasic also compiles VB, and it's very highly rated.

And remember Spider's little hint: Google is your friend.

8. I know there are differences between VBS and VB! I'm not a total retard.
Like I told them in the e-mail (I should have said the whole story in my original message), it's a matter of replacing VBS-centric code with VB-code and compiling. 20 minutes, big whoop - they don't even need to think of the structure as I already laid it out with comment lines as well.

I'll buy VB6 on my own and cancel the project. They won't help me nor do they seem to appreciate me helping them... I feel stupid for ever having offered ideas and coming up with solutions that they never fully listen to because of my having to repeat myself when I told them.

Having more programming experience won't get me a job in the future, but at least I'll know something.

You know, when other people start asking basic questions, I'll give them the same attitude as people have given me. How will people like that?

10. WTF was that about?
And leave the "retards" out of it. They're not nearly that touchy.

By the way, you're welcome.
