Band that is most sadly neglected by history?
My vote goes to Mott the Hoople. They have one song everyone knows ("All the Young Dudes"), which was written by David Bowie. Most of their music was excellent, and yet it never gets any airplay.

What say you?

1. I agree about Mott
Ian Hunter - the man who put Cleveland on the map!

My vote goes to Moby Grape. Skip Spence was a goddamn genius before going off the deep end.

10. Ian Hunter, verrrry underrated. Check out All American Alien Boy.
His band on that included Jaco Pastorious, David Sanborne, and Aynsley Dunbar.

6. Does "never properly acknowledged"=credits on Stairway?
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 04:08 PM by rsammel
It does in my book. Randy California basically wrote that tune. My choice is more obscure (most people have heard two or three Spirit songs), but Spirit is one of those bands that makes you wonder how certain bands got into the "Classic Rock Parthenon"(TM) and others didn't. Probably some type of payola.

12. To be fair, 'Taurus' and 'Stairway' are pretty different
Those opening bars are virtually identical, though. Zeppelin opened for Spirit on one of their early tours, so it's pretty clear that Jimmy did indeed nick it from them--they used to do 'Fresh Garbage' live as well.

8. They were well-known in the sixties
Their first album is truly exceptional, and you're right that they get almost zero respect these days. The pop singer Pink recently ripped off the 'Fresh Garbage' riff--when I saw it on Leno I almost threw up in my mouth. :(

You're right though, few in the US are familiar with them, though Lynne of course went on to ELO (Wood didn't last long enough there), and they influenced the crap out of Cheap Trick. :D

135. The Move
Good choice. I bought Split Ends from the cutout bin at Sears in 1976 or 1977 for 99 cents. Money well spent.

The Move morphed into Electric Light Orchestra.

Toddo Rundgren covers "Do Ya" on one of his live albums, Another Live. He says he was repaying The Move for their cover of "Open My Eyes," which I have never heard. We'll ignore this website's mention of "the Move's cretinous glam rock behemoth 'Do Ya'."

11. Soft Machine
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 04:16 PM by jpgray
Their only brief claim to respect was in the sixties when they played the UFO with Barrett era Floyd--their first three albums are great records. Ratledge in particular achieved a crazy and unique keyboard sound, and influenced Eno with his tape loop noodlings on Third, and later incarnations of the band did so as well with proto-ambient stuff like Carol Ann. Robert Wyatt with working legs is my favorite drummer/singer--what a unique voice he has!

But really, if you get a hold of their BBC sessions' first volume, just listen to 'Moon in June'--all the elements that made them a great band are there. :) The non-BBC recording isn't anywhere near as good.

33. James Booker, the greatest boogie woogie & rock n' roll piano
player ever. No other piano player in recent music history comes close to the combination of technical savvy and raw expressiveness of James Booker. I swear when he plays it is like two people are sitting at the piano playing at the same time. Even exceptionally gifted piano players have difficulty learning and playing the improvisational stuff that rolled off Booker's fingertips. Unfortunately, Booker died in obscurity and virtually no one knows this extraordinarily gifted piano wizard.

98. If you're ever in Nashville,
he plays frequently on Monday nights at the Bluebird with Mike Henderson's band (GREAT band).

He also plays more piano sessions than just about anybody.

He has a new solo record out under the name John Barlow Jarvis, that features more of his jazz and classical influences. But when it comes to honky tonk, boogie woogie, and flat out rock'n'roll, Jarvis is a monster.

There was a period in the late nineties where there was a lot of rock coming out that sounded like hip-hop; I started calling it "hip-rock".

"Better Days" by Citizen King
"Fly" by Sugar Ray
"The Hooch" by Everything
a whole lot of Kid Rock
"Friends and Family" by Trik Turner
a whole lot of Shooty'z Groove
"Steal My Sunshine" by LEN
"Butterfly" by Crazytown
"What It's Like" by Everlast

And you could probably find a bunch more.

Certainly one of the best of his time. And a great lyricist, too.

"Had a Dat"

Raging and swirling,
getting inside,
I feel Like I'm going to Break!

Bright sun sinking low,
I never feel afraid to let emotions show.
Well I did.
Now take a look at me,
I had a close brush before your destiny.

Before I end, and you'll be victims of
my stories, tales, lies, and exaggerations.
I'm gonna
When your living life like a show
you gotta
take a bow to the people you know

I said lie, for me
lying under a process tree
oh engrossing in my brain
feeling like I'm going a little insane.

a little close inside
feels like I'm going INSANE!

Red lights
are sinking low

I grab another beer cuz it's time to go...

I feel my head burst, I head out to your car
And I pray to Jesus Christ, but you won't get too far

I say uh, headlights and uh second gear
I run the road of like and skip the things you fear
I said that you might, that you might find a better way
to justify the evil things that you say

Ah, help me please, ah help me please
because I'm going upon my knees

I said, I said
going down to my knees
I pray to the Lord up above!

Help me,
I'm falling down
feeling now the cold, cold, cold, hard ground

haunting faces, and moving lines
slumber party for tonight

Pound it hard, your gonna pound it again
but please just do not pump up my friend
cuz it seems all right, gonna push him around
but I can't be taken for no clown.

Because,
when I am on the ground I CRY!

wowowowowowo.. Dub Style!

oh, cool and easy
oh no
cool and easy
to the sweet reggae music
oh no
feels all right to sweet reggae music
feels all right
sweet reggae music....

I don't know how familiar you are with Sublime, but "What I Got" isn't one of their best. Try songs like "April 29th," "Don't Push," "Superstar Punani," "Seed," "Get Ready," "40 oz to Freedom"....

Yes, they've achieved a good amount of praise for their recordings, BUT they (along with The Memphis Horns) are responsible for the Memphis Soul sound that is associated with the Stax label. Nearly every recording that came out of Memphis during the Stax revolution featured these guys in the studio.

If you love the sound of Memphis Soul/Blues, you can thank them.

68. that is really weird
when I was at the R and R Hall on Sat. they were cited as influencing a surprising number of proto punks, etc. My husband has always really liked them as well and the R and R exhibits, fascinating, BTW, sparked some good conversation about them. Synchronicity.

PS I really liked the IM PEI/ R and R Hall of Fame building. Amazing. It was so pretty down there by the lake. And we met this guy from England at the Hall who was a punk fanatic since the early days and told us all these great stories about doing security for the Clash, the Damned, etc. Pretty cool. :hi:

And if you don't believe me, take a look at this list of Top 100 British albums. You'll see the Who is way down at the friggin' bottom.

89. Not a band but a guy, Tommy Bolin
Even though he went to some bands that were useless when he got there; i.e. The James Gang and Deep Purple, it wasn't really his fault. He was just trying to play his music. And besides, the James Gang lp "Bang" is actually pretty good. It features Tommy Bolin all the way through. They are somewhat hard to find, but if you get a chance, check out the aforementioned album, cd, or whatever, and two solo efforts by Tommy Bolin, "Teaser" and "Private Eyes". Fine guitar work. Very eclectic, not just metal madness.

97. Love
They made one of the greatest albums of the 60's, Forever Changes, which most critics recognize. But their first two albums are classics in their own right. That Arthur Lee was able to reassemble a new lineup to fulfill their contract with Electra and still make a great fourth album is a testament to his genius. Keep on rocking, Arthur Lee!

102. I've read that Arthur Lee gave Hendrix hope that a black man could
succeed in rock. By the mid to late 60s blacks, who had done so much to usher in rock and roll(Chuck Berry,Bo Diddly,Little Richard, and many others),were marginalized as performers and young blacks listened to Motown almost exclusively.

For that reason alone,we owe Arthur Lee thanks. And yes,Love was a great band."Forever Changes" was a great album. As was their first one,the self titled "Love",definitive LA garage band sound."Signed DC" is as poignant and harrowing a song about drug addiction as I've ever heard, and it's as fresh today as it was then.

110. Hendrix said, "Arthur Lee IS Love!"
The two of them were great friends. Hendrix jammed with him on one of the albums Love did for the Blue Thumb label. You can get it on the CD compilation Big Beat put out called Out There.

Great to meet another Love fan! Incidentally, on the Out There CD is a very bluesy version of Signed DC that really kicks.

And give Arthur Lee credit for introducing Jim Morrison to Electra and having The Doors open for Love at the Whiskey!

129. I Object
on the grounds that any group whose entire output has made the transition to CD is automatically disqualified.

I like Mott the Hoople. I also like Roxy Music, but one can hardly say that it was neglected.

OK, I'll nominate Badfinger as the most star-crossed group. Legal squabbles tied up the group for years. Two members of the group committed suicide. Their outstanding album Straight Up was finally released on CD a few years back.

My favorite group, and one that got not a lot of mention, is 801. My favorite album is 801 Live. My favorite song on that album, and in fact my favorite rock song of all time, is "TNK," the best version of the Beatles' song "Tomorrow Never Knows" ever. EVER.

A CD of another of 801's concerts, 801 Live at Manchester University has been released.

I am all-vinyl, so I can't provide catalog numbers for the CDs.

If you want "neglected," try 801's guitar player, Phil Manzanera.
