Ever get the feeling some has TOO much faith in you?

Tonight (up at the cabin where there is a RAGING storm going on) my Dad was talking to our neighbour. The guy mentioned the paper in his town was up for sale.
My Dad wants to look into buying it and having me run it. I don't have the experience for that! Plus my folks aren't rich, they just have access to money. I mean it'd be really cool, but it'd be a life long commitment AND I'd have to hold off on a big dream of mine, which is living in Ireland for a year.
What really spooks me is how he thinks with my limited experience I could hack it. I could handle the editorial, and I've sold ads before. But I can't just walk in to a paper and start running it!

I guess most parents like to think a lot of their kids. And I also guess that this can lead to some misunderstandings about the abilities and knowledge of the child.

My mom thinks I have enough intelligence to be an engineer. I keep trying to tell I tried the college gig once and it wasn't for me. I just couldn't hack it. But she still insists that I'm smart enough to do whatever I want. She doesn't want to face the reality that I'm just an average working joe.

I could do the editorial stuff no problem. But I mean my managment experience consisted of running a shoe store, and of course the editor gig.
I don't know, if he managed it with me until I figured it all out maybe I could do it....but

i sure in the hell wouldn`t turn it down. there`s a whole list of options you can look into about running a newspaper. come up with a solid business plan and you can go from there. there`s nothing better in this world than to work for yourself and build a business on your own. i have done that for 10 yrs and although it was successful i never reached the point where i could expand..i hated giving it up but shit happens. now i really dislike going to work for someone else and i`m planning in the next business cycle to start again..go for it!!!

I have no idea how to do stuff like that.
My dad does, he's started and made a success out of his business for 25 years. My worry is all these things that pop-up outta nowhere that I'd have no clue how to deal with.

Give it as shot. Don't ever think you can't do anything. I have never failed at anything I tried. You should go for it!

faith in your abilities. Soooooo, many people out 'there' have just the opposite - their parents believe them to be worthless idiots, who don't know as much as 'they' know (just give them 25-30 years more and the kids might be 'there', right?) So be VERY thankful for your 'positive' parents. :-)

However, everyone's life belongs to 'them', not their parents aspirations for them. YOU need to decide for yourself if this is a 'dangerous opportunity' or a just a 'trap' (something destined only to failure). Where do you think you are being 'led'? Is this something that you 'want' to do? Or are you just being pushed to do it? No one on this board can POSSIBLY answer that for you. Only you can - if it 'feels' like your destiny 'do it' - if not, well, destiny always has 'something else' in mind.

He's not really pressuring. It's more like I may get myself into something I don't want becaue it's there...

Faith is an absence of logic. Faith being embodied in Abraham and Issac from the Bible...
Faith is wonderful in some situations....
But I would talk to your dad if you feel pressured.
