Is it legal to shoot photos inside a public building?
There's this large building near where I work. Inside contains a public library, a day care center, and a small ice cream shop. There's also a mini-auditorium.

In the middle is a small, contrived waterfall area. It's nice to look at ad it's humid.

I saw a sign on the front door glass reading that photo shoots require advanced notice AND a fee paid upfront.

Wait a mo', this is a public area, yes? Why are they charging?

1. Well, it's private property...

Pretty standard to require permission... if you do it on public property, I think you're supposed to get a permit, so either way.

The fee might be so they can control who takes photos there, or minimize the disruption, or whatever. Might also be for the privacy of the tenants, and so they can throw out anyone they deem undesirable.

You can probably take your little pocket camera to take a few quick shots for personal enjoyment... they may just be trying to limit bikini model shoots, or weddings or big-time disruptions, if it's really as nice as you say.

2. Do you have a photo hunting license?
I think you need one to shoot photos anywhere. :P

3. I'd be careful
If it's a private building, with a clearly posted signage stating that photo shoots require advanced notice, then they obviously have had people wanting to take pictures inside before and posted the sign for that reason.

If the building is private property it still doesn't matter if the library is open to the public.

I wouldn't take any chances. Sounds like they're pretty anal about it and they'd be willing to toss you out if you tried.

4. "a day care center"
I guess that could be a factor. I'm not a parent but I can see where one might be concerned about the possibility of strangers taking pics of a kid without the parents around.

5. Mabye A Fee Required For Commercial Shoots
And special occassions but possibly not for amatures in a public building.

I would ask first though.
