Poll question: Some women objectify themselves, often for fun and profit.
I know, total flamebait thread. ;-)

And NO, I am not including John Edwards' daughter in that group...OK?!?

1. Define "some" and "often."
I really can't answer this as it's written.

:)

5. I'm not suggesting it's all wholesome
But, shock of all shocks, there are healthy women who find "objectification" fun, sexy, even appealing.

And for those that do, my number is...:silly:

6. that's my vote
Last night on a radio show, a mother had her 5 yr. old daughter call up the DJ to tell him her mother was a "Hot Mama" and was "Sexy." I guess this woman sees nothing wrong with being cajoled by a disc jockey to proclaim herself a "Hot Mama" (apparently hundreds of women a day call in the evening hours to join the "club"), and also has no problem passing these values onto her 5 yr. old (who was quite embarrassed and didn't even want to say the words.)

4. Yes.

Of course, they do. Mostly for money, though, not for fun. Unless they're total idiots.

7. Some women objectify men, mostly for fun.

Take dildos, for instance. Can't get more objectified then that.

13. No, a dildo is not a man.

A dildo is a dildo. Unless, of course, you consider yourself a dildo.

11. False
My position is that sexual objectifications are part of the culture, and are not the product of any one individual.

If you said, "Some women exploit the objectification of women, often for fun and profit" I would agree with you.

I do think there are cases of women defining their own sexual identity by assuming an objective point of view. I don't think that's what you had in mind, although I suppose there are ambigous examples you might cite. Anyway, I chose "false."

12. other things people do for fun and profit
• are exposed to hazardous chemicals

• work 14-hour days in sweatshops

• fight in George W. Bush's wars

• make piles of naked Iraqi men in George W. Bush's prison camps

All wonderful choices people make that we must celebrate, because we are after all a rich tapestry and we honor one another's journeys. etc.

15. I think a lot of women like to be admired

on certain occasions, for having nice bodies. So what?

I like to admire women with nice bodies (and I find many types of bodies to be nice), too. It's what fashion is all about -- looking good and attracting attention.

We are physical beings, just as much as we are mind or spirit.

17. Yeah, the danger is when the ladies feel threatened
Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 09:13 PM by m-jean03
Or feel that they are being treated ONLY as an object. As someone who's been on both sides of the fence of female objectification... I know it is really demeaning and maddening when that's all you are seen as, and I also know how hard it is not to want to leer sometimes.

So, I guess my advice for everyone who loves women is R-E-S-P-E-C-T, as Aretha Franklin put it. :-) And self-control, too.

20. Gee
/We are physical beings, just as much as we are mind or spirit.

I like men's bodies. Say, did you hear they cut out a full frontal scene of that Irish actor, Colin...oh what's his name, anyway he was in "Phone Booth". Word is, Colin's, er, well-endowed, shall we say. I guess TOO well-endowed. Gee, why would they cut the scene because a guy's to, er, gifted in that region? Not quite ready for prime time Hollywood?

Come to think of it, why aren't more men frolicking full frontal in movies anyway? (I mean non-porn movies.) Isn't it time for the penis to share the stage with the female anatomy?

Why are men in Hollywood so gosh darn modest?

21. I don't know -- I agree with ya

"Objectify" all who care to be objectified in real life but respect their humanity as well.

Among actors and actresses the burden should certainly be more fairly distributed.

18. Women who are very attractive to men have basically two options....
They can either exploit it, or they can be driven crazy by men hitting on
them all the time. What would you do?

A third option very attractive women sometimes pick is to marry young
and effectively take themselves off the market.

19. Empress Theodora, Nell Gynne, the list goes on
and some men have done it too...although women have been able to lead men around with sex....

As I have often heard..."Men are like linoleum floors..lay 'em right and you can walk on em for 30 years"...

some PEOPLE objectify THEMSELVES... and you can stop perpetuating this flamebait. Men objectify themselves too, just as much as women do. Give me a freaking break.

26. A response TO the debate, actually.
Of course men objectify themselves, too - in many ways.

The onus in the previous debate seemed to be put solely on men -- just keeping the playing field level.
