Poll question: Let's have a battle of the midwest fish fry: Walleye or Perch?
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 05:06 PM by HuckleB
If you've never been to a midwest fish fry, it's high time you hit the road and found out what this country's all about.

For those in the know, what's yer fave? Remember this is war. So take no prisoners! Don't just vote, dis' that other fish. Come on, it won't hurt. Everyone knows that fish don't have any feelings.

By the way, who sung that?

8. This is a midwest fish fry.
Not some new-fangled, pop culture way to sell food.

This is old school and proud!

9. Yeah, well I'm from Missouri
That still in the midwest?
I also live by a large lake in MT where Walleye is king and trucks haulin' boats from all over got by my little house.

But it just happens that a taco is about the best thing to do with fried fish! Try it, you'll like it!

10. I've tried it. None for me, thanks.
If it's fried right, midwest style, with light batter and flash fried, the only way to eat it is on your plate all by itself, with a tiny bit of tartar sauce or butter, if you choose. No need to dress it up. It's pure and good.

Now that thick, nasty beer-battered British-style stuff, yeah, please put it in a taco. Do something with it! Anything!

:)

19. Yep--you DO live in Illinois!!!
I was all set to defend the joys of fresh Crappie--and you all beat me to it! Is this peculiar to Illinois? Do they even bother cleaning those little guys in other places?

I can happily say it is my favorite of the freshwater fish!

20. In Wisconsin and Minnesota, sure.
After the Perch and Walleye are all gone. Crappie is second tier, but, hey, isn't that why you guys all come up north to fish, in the first place?

:)

26. Hon, we DON'T come up for Fish Boils!
What kind of fish is it they use in the boils? We went to one of those in Door one time and it was not my cup of tea!

I was so bummed by it all--I'd been reading about Fish Boils and it sounded SO NEAT. Then, I got this big plate of boiled fish and boiled potatoes and onions just swimming in melted margarine...

I know you all hate us FIB's, but, man--that was just unkind!

Anyhow, on a personal note, the biggest bass I ever caught was up in a small lake in north Wisconsin many many years ago. It isn't always about the Perch, Walleye or even Muskie! ;)

28. In Door? That's for tourists, and I don't mean neighboring state tourists.
Ya'll should know better. The locals ain't going in there. Or they shouldn't be. You can't trust those folks in Door.

Just go across the border a ways, to Jefferson County, and try a little town called Sun Prairie or even Rome. Sure, there are better fries in the state, but you'll find the classic bargain good stuff there.

And, yeah, I know there are plenty of great fish all-around, but when it comes to fish fry, the first tier is perch and walleye. It jus' don' get any better. And it's usually a treat, since it's not always available, even with a fishing pole.

And, come now, I don't have an ounce of hate in my bones. Heck, I married one of ya'll, after all.

:)

Salud!

No catfish here.

Somewhere else. Or some other night, sure.

Still, even then, we're talking perch and walleye, and you want catfish? What are you thinking?

27. Walleye for me!
Aside from that, I'd also go with Crappie & bluegill. Tasty little fish and easy to clean; probably about 3 minutes per fish.

All of the above are best grilled with plenty of lemon pepper and a fish seasoning by Chef Paul. Dammit. Now I'm hungry and I want to go fishing.

And spice equals salt & pepper? C'mon, just a good-natured regional ribbing...

35. Nope.
The flavor doesn't need to be hidden with heat, that's all. The fish is too good to waste on extreme spice.

Hey, you want ribbing, I got ribbing.

36. I'll take a large order of walleye cheeks and a cold beer!
I have a sweet tooth for walleye! And I love to catch them! Some pretty fair walleye fishing here year around! The ones I eat come out of a clean cold gin clear 300 foot deep lake and they are toothsome to the max! Perch are nowhere to be found here, but we have plenty of slab sized crappie and huge blue gill to help ease the pain! The smallie fishing is great here too, but I never eat bass, so I can catch them again later!

I just like to catch fish of any kind though and there is some good fishing here in Wv year around, if you like those old nasty 10 pound trout!
