Help with "Pop-up" protection!!!
Who among you has the answer to pop-up ads? I want something fool-proof that I don't have to mess with and is not intrusive in any way. Anybody?

1. Get the new Mozilla Firebird browser!
Looks more like IE than the old Mozilla/Nutscrape models but doesn't have the M$ swiss cheese, and you can either block pop up windows completely or allow them for certain websites where "good" popups might actually exist (i.e. the smilies reference table here at DU)

2. 2 solutions
Pop-Up Stopper is completely free and available at www.panicware.com. The only problem is, if you want a pop-up to pop up, you have to hold the control button while you click it. (It's a mild inconvenience, IMO.)

The other solution would be to get a new browser. I use Mozilla at home (www.mozilla.org), and it automatically blocks unrequested pop-ups while allowing requested ones, without having to hold down any special keys. Mozilla is an open-source browser based on Netscape technology, so perhaps Netscape has this ability built in as well(?).

I'm sure others have great solutions as well. These two have worked wonders for me.

5. Pop-Up Stopper
has been a godsend to me. I absolutely HATE pop-ups with a purple passion. The only other inconvenience is if you go to print something, you have to turn the program off. (I think the full feature version eliminates all aforementioned inconveniences). For me, it's a minor thing, because this program has made browsing a pleasure again, just like the old days. And it took 5 seconds to load it on my machine.

Hope you find something you like!:)

3. or install the Google Toolbar for IE
http://toolbar.google.com/
Use the non-advanced-features version (because it doesn't phone home).

7. DO NOT install google tool-bar
It is spyware. You should remove it from your system.

9. Only the advanced features version
Edited on Wed Aug-27-03 07:24 PM by Kellanved
The non advanced version only has the "auto-update" problem. While this is an enormous security risk, it is one shared by many comparable applications.

6. go directly to Mozilla
Netscape is lagging behind technically and has some "phone home" features.

Otherwise the two are identical.

8. Identical? Naw, Mozilla is way ahead of Netscape.
Plus its open-source.

11. Mozilla. I've had it for three weeks with zero "pop-ups".
Apparently it's a "build" off of Netscape (The Anti-MS).

Try it, you'll like it.
