What is your favorite sports rivalry?
Yanks and Sox are going at it,the Cards and Cubs hate each other. Red Wings vs. Avalanche are brawls. Sure makes the games more interesting.

12. I'd add Steelers vs. Ravens as well
While the Turnpike Rivalry is traditional, the Ravens/Steelers rivalry seems more relevant the last couple seasons.

23. Steelers / Browns
My wife is a huge Browns fan, and I've been a Steelers fan all my life. Two weekends a year, we have to separate ourselves for a bit.

Of course, the day after our wedding, the Browns took their only victory in the series over the past few years, in front of me & all her Browns-loving friends. That was a blast... :(

100. can you believe we have two more years of Cowher???
God, how many chances can one guy get?

I used to be a big Cowher fan, but enough is enough. This guy is simply not going to take this team to a Super Bowl victory, period.

I just can't believe he was not fired after last year. In 2002, the team had one glaring weakness...its secondary (otherwise, they would have easily won it all that year).

So what does Cowher do to fix that problem in 2003? Absolutely positively nothing. He doesn't fire the defensive coordinator, he doesn't fire the secondary coach, he doesn't even release Dewayne Washington. And what happens throughout the 2003 season?? The secondary gets lit up every game. Quarterbacks have career games against the Steelers.

I'm sorry, if that doesn't get you fired, what does?

My initial reaction was Packers/Bears, but then I thought Packers/Vikings. Somehow to me there seems to be more "fun" with Packers/Bears.

it's not as much "a spirited competition" like it kinda is with the Bears. It's more "I hate these guys" rivalry with the Queens.

54. It's like this.
A Packers fan and a Bears fan can be in a bar going at it for hours, but as soon as a Vikings fan walks in the door, they'll team up against the Vikings fan. Still, at the end of the day, the only games that matter to Bears and Packers fans are the ones against each other.

101. That's not the only song about that rivalry
The official Navy Song was originally a football song:

Stand Navy down the field, sails set to the sky.
We'll never change our course, so Army you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh.
Sail Navy down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army Grey.

Get underway, Navy, Decks cleared for the fray,
We'll hoist true Navy Blue So Army down your Grey-y-y-y.
Full speed ahead, Navy; Army heave to,
Furl Black and Grey and Gold and hoist the Navy, hoist the Navy Blue

Blue of the Seven Seas; Gold of God's great sun
Let these our colors be Till all of time be done-n-n-ne,
By Severn shore we learn Navy's stern call:
Faith, courage, service true With honor over, honor over all.

And then they went out and fucked it up.

Had the 'U.S. Navy Hymn Book'...

And it included "Anchor's Away" with ALL of the verses (there's like 40), "The Old Gray Mare", and others.

Someone once noted that of all the Service Acadamies, only the Navy named it's enemy in it's official song...

Having lived the majority of my life on the Kentucky / Indiana border, I am intimately familiar with this rivalry and celebrate it every season. I lived in northern Indiana for five years and became acquainted with a more complex system of rivalries involving IU, U of Mich, Mich State, Purdue, Notre Dame, etc., but people there still took the UK / IU basketball matchup very seriously.

18. Texas vs. OU
College Football doesn't get any better than this. Every October the Cotton Bowl is split down the middle, 1/2 Burnt Orange and 1/2 red. The hate that each side has for the other simply cannot be explained to an outsider. Fans stand up screaming the whole game. The Texas State Fair is the setting. Both teams enter the field from the same "Tunnel"at the same time leading to many an engagement before the game even begins. The Texas cannon, Ole Smokey, fires continously after a Texas win. There is no game that is more important to win. Players cry after losses. 37,500 Longhorn fans screaming "Ou Sucks" while the Ou school song is played. The state Fair corn dogs are pretty good too.

HOOK 'EM HORNS!!!!!
OU SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

;-)

Maybe the best sports rivalry is the rivalry of which rivalry is the best? :-)

The Michigan - OSU rivalry is certainly something to behold. I have two good friends, one of whom is a Michigan alumn, the other an OSU alumn. For about two weeks every year, the week before and the week after the game, they hate each other. They go to the game together, and I have no idea how they avoid killing each other. I went along once and served as a buffer.

One year, I got them both to attend an OU - Texas game with me so they could watch me act like an idiot while they tried to feign detached, calm reason. The biggest difference, according to them, was the split stadium and the association with the Texas State Fair.

30. Falcons/Saints...
These two teams typically hate each other. I know they don't have the history of a Yankees/Bo Sox, or Packers/Bears, but it is a great rivalry. This rivalry flies under the radar because the teams year in year out, aren't terribly good, but they battle each other hard. I think that is why it is such a good rivalry, because the teams are similar in my ways, including fairly tough histories...Kevin.

I'm quite fond of the Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United rivalry, being a Wednesdayite myself!

The Celtic/Rangers rivalry is not just about being the best in Glasgow, it's also got a very sectarian element to it as well.

that's the whole bloody point of their existence, sadly.
Same goes for Hearts and Hibs, even Dundee and Dundee Utd.

The Yankees hate the Red Sox because the Red Sox always start things between the teams. Americans pull for the Red Sox because we hate fucking dynasties. That why the NFL is doing better than MLB because the whole league is competitive, not just a small handfull of teams.

84. No.
The NFL is doing better because it has better marketing and it's a sport suited to television in the age of television. Baseball is a sport suited to live attendance, and, in fact, its attendance is as good, if not better, than it's ever been. Nevermind the reality that one really can't compare the two. What would the ratings for NFL games be if there was a slate of games on TV every day? Scarcity plays into the NFL's ratings, as well as the weekend only games.

88. MLB sucks because the sport is extremly elitest now
The NFL is suited for blue collar fans(like me) because every team has a chance to make a run at the Lombardi Trophy. In MLB though has become very elitest only wanting fans that are upper middle class. MLB also has all of its star power conentrated in 3 or 4 teams, discouraging fans in smaller markets from supporting the local team because they don't have a chance win a championship or make the playoffs. The NFL likes blue collar fans that go to their games yelling, screaming and dressing up like World Cup soccer fans do. MLB teams though kick fans out of the stadium that heckle players, takes tickets away from season ticket holders because they're "too loud." MLB has become boring(except Red Sox/Yankees) because the games outcomes can be foretold before the game starts. Yet everygame and everyteam in the NFL is exciting because there aren't any dynasties that more or less have the seasons outcome in a lock; this makes everygame exciting because everygame is important.

94. Don't be fooled. The NFL is the most elitist league in sports.
It has the highest ticket prices. It spends the most money on propaganda to the masses. It gets the most tax subsidies with the least return to the community of any sport.

Meanwhile, Joe Blue Collar can still afford to go to a baseball game.

Nevermind that one must spend 3 1/2 to 4 hours to get 3 to 5 minutes of action in an NFL game, while one gets nearly constant action over 2 hours and 40 minutes at a baseball game.

Sorry, but your cliches don't match reality.

113. Baseball doesn't give any return to its community as well
No sport should be seen as a $$$ oppurtunity that can be the economic base of the communitty. Who do you think pays for all of those goddamned new baseball stadiums that Bud Selig loves. In Cincinnat the Bengals are paying off Paul Brown Stadium yet the Reds can't make their payments on Great American Ballpark. If you like baseball better than football that's ok. I like football more than I do baseball and I have my reasons.

116. Do your homework.
Baseball stadiums do make money for their communities, and they do help redevelop neighborhoods. This has been shown repeatedly. Football stadiums do neither.

You might want to look at the size of any payments being made in Cinicinnati before you use that, or any other comparison, as an example.

At any rate, don't try to fall back on the old "you like/I like" routine. You tried to play propagandist for football, and I called you on it, showing the reality of the NFL, as the epitome of propaganda in American sport. It's the GOP of pro-sports in America. Sorry, that's just reality.

I've got nothing against the game. I'm just tired of people falling for the propaganda and then choosing to bash baseball at will without reason.

129. Hate to jump in on your lovely arguement...
And I speak only from personal, local experience...

Alex Spanos (owner of the SD Chargers) is the biggest welfare fraud and Republican supporter in the state.

The owner of the SD Padres (whose name I've forgotten) is second.

OWNERS of pro teams are almost all Plutocratic scum who support Republicans.

Going into history...

Baseball is a sport with no time limit; and takes quite a bit of space and equipment. A sport of the idle classes, who can afford the gear and the time.

Football (originally, modern football is quite different) had strict time limits, and no equipment. A sport of the working class. Modern football, of course, while it has time limits violates them regularly, and requires mucho equipment, more than baseball.

So, Baseball started elitest and worked its way down; football started common and worked its way up.

Flame away.

134. All quite correct, except for the bit about origins and equipment.
Football quickly used equipment and plenty of it, nevermind that baseball equipment originated as handmade stuff from what was around. Your history of these two is quite skewed, as you argue that baseball was something akin to golf, when nothing could be further from the truth. It was, and remains, the ultimate working class sport, practiced on farms and outside of factories from day one. And, despite time limits, football games have always taken as long, if not longer, than baseball games historically. Of course, today, we see NFL games go longer each year, while MLB has worked hard to successfully shrink the average time of its games, and the difference in those times will soon be over an hour, with an NFL game lasting an hour longer than an MLB game.

In pro sports, Packers vs. Vikes, the Bears have lost something like 18 of the last 20 against my beloved Packers and Cubs-Cards in baseball.
