I'm a Missouri girl and very soon I will be in New York City from around midnight until the next afternoon (getting a room the next day in Rhode Island).
Can anyone recommend some safe areas/activities I might engage in to pass those nighttime hours until the sun comes up and I can hit the morning shows in Times Square to pimp my website?
I'm not all too worried, I just have a tendency to get lost in new places and I don't want to wander off to a bad spot. I figure NY is about as safe as New Orleans, and I've tromped all around those streets late at nite without much worry.
You do not want to spend the night there. There is nothing open. If you want to spend the night out in NY stick to the Village (either East or West). You can see a movie, you can eat and eat and eat-go listen to some jazz then eat some more. You can ride the Staten Island Ferry and watch the sun come up over the water. It will be great--- have fun
That city really never does sleep. Never. And there's a lot less crime than there used to be. Still, avoid dark alleys and places where you can be caught alone, and you should be fine.
at night--lots of people around--lots of interesting things to see--I'm a small-town girl from SC and have never felt frightened either time I've been to NYC. Just use common sense like you'd do at home and you'll be fine. Greenwich is also very cool to stroll around in. The great thing about NYC is that the "look" of the city changes every 20 blocks or so.
