Nominations for Worst Acting Ever please.
I've thought long and hard. There are so many sub-categories to this award. There's 'Worst Acting by a Rock Star' which will be shared out posthumously by Michael Hutchence for 'Dogs in Space' with David Bowie for 'The Linguini Incident'. There's 'Worst Acting by a Great Actor' which goes to Ian McKellan for 'The Shadow'. Worst Acting in a Sci-Fi role? Ms. Jane Badler who memorably portrayed space-nazi Diana in 'V'. Oh, and there's Vin Diesel.
Start nominating, peeps.

2. I know it's a cliche and obvious answer....
..but Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls really was THAT bad. I've seen many of Z-grade, direct to video movies with horrible actors and actresses in them. But her performance in that movie really was one of the worst things I've ever seen.

Sorry I couldn't be more creative. I've literally seen thousands of movies over the years. But no performance sticks out in my mind like that one.

The Godfather part III. Although she's redeemed herself with Lost in Translation.

Any movie Theresa Russell is in.

Any movie Sean Young is in.

(I don't watch Vin Diesel movies for his "acting")

39. I Respectfully Disagree
The criticism against SC's performance was, IMO, driven by petty critics infuriated by the nepotism involved, and disappointed that Copola didn't put one of their preferred "babes" in the role. Then successfully filtered down to the masses.

SC did at the very least, provide an adequate job of presenting a believable character.

her hesitancy and naivete seemed very appropriate for the well-shielded daughter of a mafia don. I generally deplore nepotism, but I do think that she was right for the role.

65. I respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement
She was absolutely the worst, and I don't think I was influenced by critics, just by what I saw on the screen.

I will say that Kelly Preston's "performance" in "For the Love of the Game" was right up there among the worst performances of all time.

Was SC's performance any more or less memorable than that of the actor casted to play Michael's son? How many DUers, without looking it up, can even name the actor who played Michael's son?

Edited on Mon Jul-26-04 04:53 PM by FrankBooth
She was simply awful IMHO. So I would say yes, her performance was worse than the kid who played Michael's son.

Hey, it's all subjective after all.

On the other hand, I liked "Virgin Suicides" and "Lost in Translation," so I do appreciate her as a writer and director.

123. She had no chemistry with Andy Garcia, which made her performance
even crappier than what the critics told me it would be. And believe me, Andy Garcia has so much freaking chemistry you could have put a kumquat in the role of Mary and Garcia and the Kumquat would have sizzled on screen.

Sure, Mary was suppose to be the protected daughter of a major mafioso who just so happen to have the hots for her half-cousin. Coppala just seemed like a dingbat around Garcia which made the whole 'half-cousin' thing even creepier.

It's a shame that Wyonna Ryder had backed out of the role. I think that Wyonna could have pulled off the whole relationship with Andy Garcia's 'Cousin Vinnie"

that a young Winona Ryder was originally set to play that role, but dropped out at the last minute, leaving FFC scrambling to find a replacement.

That said, Coppola's nepotism is evident in many of his films, and a bit too much on occasion.

113. I never understood the point of making Godfather III
Coppola should have quit while he was ahead. There was no way he was going to top I and II, or even come close to being as good. Frankly, I can't see Winona Ryder in that part either. Joe Mantegna and Andy Garcia were both great, but I'd watch either one of them combing their hair for 2 hours.

73. I second this!
Kevin made one of my all time favorite movies, Dances With Wolves, but I think he is a lousy actor in just about anything. He can't keep an accent most of the time, and is laughable. I'm not just talking about his laughable British accent in Robinhood. In JFK, he would have a sort of southern accent for a few minutes, then sound like Midwestern right in the middle of his sentence.

Of course his rating as a director/producer went way, way down when I saw Waterworld. Yikes, talk about a bad movie. It makes me wonder who really made Dances With Wolves. ;-)

110. I liked him in it, go figure
Nevertheless, I have a hard time coming down on actors for bad acting because it's the director's responsibility to get the best performance out of them. Actors go after a role, but they don't hire themselves. If they get miscast, it's not really their fault. They don't write their own lines either. Saying that Elizabeth Berkley was bad in Showgirls kind of misses the point. It was a shitty movie with a shitty script. No one is going to turn it into Shakespeare. If anyone's to blame, it's director Paul Verhoeven and writer Joe Eszterhas.

Oddly enough, Showgirls' badness is being capitalized on now:

9. Actors that only play themselves.
Sometimes the material is so bad that even good actors are crap. However, there is a group of highly-paid, should-be-better actors that can only play one character. Themselves.

Most Guilty - Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise

Cruise can act when he wants to. He put Pitt to shame in "Interview with a Vampire", actually I've never liked Pitt in anything, and did a good job with "Born on the 4th of July". But yes...there are several who are very rich just by playing themself.

25. That's unfortunate, because the book is one of her best
She wrote it before the vampire and witch books. I dread what NBC will do to "The Witching Hour" since they bought the rights and plan a mini-series on it. It should be on cable, so they can really be true to the book. And leave any reference to the lame-ass sequels out, except end it with Lasher's death, not the way she ended the book.

13. Julia Roberts in "Michael Collins"
It's easy to pick on non-actors, but she's done OK in other movies. And it's easy to pick on movies that were all 'round turkeys. However, Michael Collins was a big production, starring Liam Neeson. It had an important story to tell & was excellent in many ways.

But poor Julia made no effort at an Irish accent. Beyond the accent, she just seemed lost. I guess they thought they needed a "star". If only they'd hired a good Irish accent, the whole movie would have benefited.

Madonna lived the role of marginally talented ambitious sleep-your-way-to-the-top heroine. Other actresses might have been better, but none could have embodied Evita the way Madonna did. But, other than that, she's not a very good actress. Though I like her anyway.

Edited on Mon Jul-26-04 09:16 AM by rocknation
I decided to give it a try only because she was paired with a "real" actor in Kevin Kostner. She was so awful not even HE could conceal his contempt--he spent the entire movie looking like he was five seconds away from throwing up.

The Bodyguard isn't the only movie I've regretted sitting through, of course. But it is the first one that made wish I could sue the producer for robbing me two hours of my time!

68. again, I don't think they gave her much to work with
Liam Neeson and Ewan Mc Gregor were wasted somewhat in the first one, and McGregor had little to do in the second one, except to play the dispproving dad. What a waste of real talent. Although, you could also argue that Alec Guinness was wasted in the originals.

Lucas has a lot to answer for, esp. in that teen-smooch/love scene/ gagfest between Anakin and Amydala. Not even as good as MTV fare.

from Ms. Griffith's body of work is extremely tough...but I have to say that her hilariously bad acting in "Vanities" is the worst ever.

Melanie Griffith deserves a place in the "Worst Acting Hall of Fame, Lifetime Achievement".

62. Brad Pitt, "12 Monkeys," Angelina Jolie, "Girl, Interrupted..."
Ohhhh, sooooo many more I could name. Everything Hollywood has touched recently has turned to shit. Our standards for cinematic adequacy are so low, we've learned to not even recognize bad acting when it appears. For instance, some people think that "The Matrix" is a great movie.

85. what?
Pitt was excellent in "12 Monkeys".

I think the fact that he is so pretty is one reason so many people dump on him as an actor.

And I thought "The Matrix" was a great movie. Great fun, great effects. Is it Shakespeare? No. But some people don't require Shakespeare out of every film.

So, when was this mythical Golden Age when everything Hollywood turned out was pure cinema magic?

92. I think Pitt has acted very well in several movies.
12 Monkeys, True Romance, Snatch, Seven, and Fight Club. Of course in Fight Club he was playing a role that probably came easy. Looks like you wanna look, fuck like you wanna fuck, and so on. Can't guarantee he fucks like I wanna fuck, but he does so with someone that I wouldn't pass up.

116. Um...the seventies.
The Godfather, The Conversation, Harold and Maude, MASH, The King of Marvin Gardens, Five Easy Pieces, Up in Smoke, Save the Tiger, Taxi Driver, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Mean Streets, Catch 22, Love in Bloom, Apocalypse Now, The Last Picture Show, Nashville, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Exorcist, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein..... need I go on? It's a long list. Major studio movies have basically been shit since the ascent of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.

ANYONE can do what Brad Pitt did in 12 Monkeys. It goes like this: "Oh, I'm insane, I'mstutt-stutt-stuttering and I'm blinking a lot, andI'mtalkingreallyfgastnow, then I laugh maniacally HAHAHAHAHA!, and then I'm stutt-stutt-stuttering again, Oh my god can't you see how insane I am?" And then bug out your eyes and pretend you have a facial tic. Easy.

Roller Boogie
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
The Swarm
The Towering Inferno (actually nominated for a Best Picture Oscar!)
Earthquake
Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter
Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell
and the Billy Jack trilogy

yeah, some real classics there.

EVERY decade has its share of dogs, of trash cinema. The seventies were no better in this regard.

As for Pitt's acting: Great, if it's so easy why aren't you doing it? You didn't see the subtlety in the performance, obviously.

90. Bad acting award: Historical film division
Although All Quiet on the Western Front is a wonderful anti-war movie from the 1930s, Lew Ayres as the central character is bad, bad, bad. He recites his lines as if he's reading a story to kindergarteners.

Bad acting awards: Historical television division: In the mid 1970s, I saw both Mark Spitz and Billie Jean King doing small roles in sitcoms. There is a very good reason that neither one of them ever had an acting career: they were both absolutely wooden in their performances.
