Computer question for any geeks on board...

I have a dial-up connection. At various times when the modem is dialing, I don't hear anything. Then after a week or two, some setting seems to change and I can hear the dialing/connection process very quietly. Right now, the whole process is broadcasting around the house at ear-splitting volume. I have the PC volume on mute. Have checked the modem setting and it says the sound is off. What's going on here? Am I missing something somewhere, or is this an annoying glitch I have to live with? Suggestions appreciated.

Go to control panel, phone and modem options, highlight your modem and click properties. Choose the modem tab. You can set your modem volume there.

(May vary slightly per your version of Windows.)

EDIT: oops just noticed you've tried this. You may have to crank up regedit or something.

3. try this, might work

you can add the M0 command to your modem's setup string. In the Properties dialog, click the Connection tab, then click the Advanced button. You'll see a line marked Extra Settings. Type in ATM0, then click OK. That should tell your modem to turn the speaker off when it's initialized. Now log onto the Net; the speaker should be silent.
