English teachers/professors/grammarians...
Edited on Sat Aug-30-03 07:45 PM by Rowdyboy
If I want to tell someone he was the object of my affections, would the following be grammatically appropriate.

"I only ever wanted one thing in life and you are he"

How would you express the sentiment?

1. I'm no grammarian...
...but you're calling "he" a "thing"...

You might say that your one wish in life was finding the perfect person with whom to spend your life, and (your SO) is that person.

2. I'd replace the "he"
with 'it', 'that thing', 'that very thing', 'that one thing'.

might consider

'I only ever thought I would love one person above all in my life and you are he'

'I've known from (fill in the blank) that you are the one love of my life'

nothing really wrong with your line but it sounds a little funny connecting 'thing' and 'he' at least to me.

this sounds importent, good luck !

You expressed everything I wanted to in the tne I wanted.

You, sir or madam, have won the contest. Your prize is on the way...

8. Well, since you asked:
I'd screw the grammar, and all the proper anglish, and just grab his ears betwixt my palms and kiss the living shit out of his tender lips.

Let him put it into words :D

9. here ye go
There are many fine ways to do it, but like another poster, I shy away from calling people things. I recommend colon usage.

"... one thing in life: you."

Best of luck.

13. Grammarians (and others) often just start over when somethng
sounds stilted.

How about: You are all I ever wanted in life.

(And the simpler constructions are easier to say, because they're natural and in the spoken idiom--so you're less likely to trip over your tongue trying to say it.)

Good luck!
