I need an answer quick
I live in the woods with a small pump to run the well which must be manually turned on and off.
I need to shut it down but it's dark out and the dogs have been barking like crazy (rare) on and off for a while.

Do I take the spotlight or add a firearm?

I'm in one of those 'this is just like in the movies when you tell the chick she's an idiot to go outside alone unarmed ' moments while thinking I'm just being silly to worry over a common chore.

What would Mama T do?

1. That's one of those things you have to rely on your instincts for...

if you are feeling something is just not right then do as you see fit.

I don't scare too easy, so may not be the best advisor.

5. well if anything's out there it didn't grab me.
I guess without a firearm I could jump in the pen with my Arab mare. She's more of a bitch than I am, and she and the horse with her ( and one that died this past winter) all saved me one time from this wierdo. At least, i think they saved me. They surrounded me and wouldn't let me out of the triangle they made.

The mares are the best in battle, they say. Thanks for your answer Dover. DU always comes through!!!!!

6. The dogs are loose
They stay here - one sleeps on my car ( let's not talk about the muddy pawprints ALL OVER THAT hood. Grrrrr. But who will break into the car, huh?) but they are always around when i'm outside.

I usually am pretty unafraid, i just was doubting myself for a moment.

7. I understand...
I'd be creeped out myself. Take the gun. It's most likely you don't need it, but why even take the risk?

8. ah, I see you're back
good.

And yeah, I suspect a horse could do a good job of protecting someone. They're pretty tough.

9. I'm in now
and should just go to bed.
But i hear fourwheelers ( whispered as in: I hear dead people) which means maybe the crankers are coming around again or someone's checking out a cash crop or some nut who has a crush on me is wandering around out back.

Chances are it's just a good old boy out of cigarettes or sneaking home after a tryst or checking trot lines.....

A bunch of political shit hit the fan at work today, so I feel a bit vulnerable.
But i have the guns nearby and i am safe.
Thanks for answering my late night post, Dookus

10. I'd take both
And I'd also bring the dogs inside, in case there's something out there that could harm them. I know that you are okay, now, but I would just be careful. I also used to own a gun and it's dangerous to carry one when you're jumpy, especially if it's dark and you can't see what is going on. "Be sure of your target" is one of the first rules I learned. I'm glad to know that this turned out okay.:-)

12. It is cumbersome to handle a firearm and spotlight and
negotiate the path to the pumphouse. You are so right. So I left a big'n propped inside the door.

One dog will never come indoors - she is wild, but sweet. Even i can't catch her. And the other is a slob and a half who is not allowed indoors.

But they guard me and so do the neighbor dogs and i feel pretty safe. No one can see their neighbor out here, but my right side neighbor's pop is a county cop and he makes his nightime rounds through here regularly.

The frontier lives on....

13. If I had to choose, I think I would choose the light
At least you can see what is out there. I have night-blindness, so always need my path to be well lit. Maybe you should think of putting up more lights, so you can just turn them on, if needed. I was just thinking, tonight, that I should do this.

It's too bad about your dogs. There must be a way to work with them, so they can be closer to you. Look into the Tellington Touch, for example. I have two, as well, and they sleep on the couch or on my bed. They aren't big dogs, but are great company.:-)

You're lucky in your neighbor. I also live in the boonies, though I am in Northern New York. It sounds as if it is much the same as it is where you are. I have a cousin in Eastern Tennessee. She has found a real home there. Just take care of yourself, and your dogs, who also take care of you.:-)
