A Carnival cruise ship was thrown into turmoil after pranksters got control of the public address system and told passengers and crew members to "abandon ship" just hours before it was to dock in New York.
"People freaked out," said Chris Vig, 36, of New Hyde Park, L.I., who was on the ship as it returned Saturday with about 1,000 passengers from a seven-day cruise to the Bahamas. "It was absolute panic."
Many passengers thought terrorists had seized control of the ship, Vig said.
Carnival officials confirmed the incident occurred Saturday about 3:45 a.m. aboard the Miracle as it was returning to New York - and blamed the prank on "guest or guests" who got into an area "that is normally locked and unoccupied."
