I'm DU'ing from Prince Edward Island, Canada. Ask me anything...
I've found a computer at the tiny town library that I can use to check in at DU, thank God! I thought I'd have to go two weeks without a DU fix and I was suffering at the thought.

PEI is beautiful, lovely and cool and I can dig for steamers right down on the beach in front of my Mom's cottage. Life is good.

Bush is very, very unpopular here and I've apologized to many of my Canadian friends, as a representative of the US, for our moronic and internationally abusive president. It's prompted many interesting conversations and the overall sentiment is that they like Americans but hate the squatter in the White House. The Big Dog is sorely missed!

1. I'd like to hear more about the non-US perspective there
What's their view of the election?

9. What I'm hearing so far
is that they want Kerry to win. They also like Edwards. Bush is almost universally disliked for his disrespect toward Canada from the very beginning of his presidency. Also, the ambassador to Canada has been a real asshole which hasn't endeared him or his boss to the Canadians - he's threatened the Canadian government over the pot issue, cheap Canadian drugs and Canada's refusal to go to Iraq.
I'm also hearing disbelief that Americans aren't more upset that Bush's WMD's weren't found and new reasons for invasion were given to the public.
Because of CNN and all the American stations available on satellite, most Canadians are pretty well informed about American politics, but I've heard quite a bit that the American press corps are a bunch of wimps when it comes to reporting on Bush. I've heard many folks say that Clinton was hounded for a silly matter and Bush is allowed to get away with outrageous statements, the Iraq invasion, and giving away the government to his rich friends.
After being in repug Virginia, this is like coming home!

5. Lobster season is over now
Each end of the island gets six weeks twice a year to preserve the fishing grounds. Unfortunately, this year sucked on the east end of the island so the fishermen are hurting. Canada does a good job of protecting the fishing grounds and keeping them from being over-fished, unlike New England where I grew up and lobstermen have to go 30 miles or more offshore to fish for enough catch to make money.

3. I had a similar experience a year ago in Whistler
we were in a crowded gondola with a bunch of locals and mixed Europeans talking seriously about Bush and American foreign policy when someone suddenly realized that we were American. An embarrassed hush fell over the group, until I picked up the thread and said that I agreed - bad policy and bad leaders need to be criticized regardless.

At no point had anyone said anything mean about Americans in general -- which is quite different from the way we treated the French when they didn't agree with us. Different, nicer people up there.

4. So how's it going, eh?
I asked a friend who just visited in Ontario what her relatives thought of the candidates. She said they didn't like any of them. Truth hurts sometimes, don't it?

My guess is the only place in the world where you'd find support for Bush might be Saudi Arabia!

6. I live in Vancouver, BC
I was at a BBQ on the weekend. The topic turned toward American politics. Everyone wanted Bush out. Everyone thinks that he is arrogant, unilateral and less than bright. I know that I am personally offended that he hasn't seen fit to pay a courtesy call to your closest neighbour. Traditionally, the first foreign visit a US president makes is to Canada.

7. Hi there!
I don't have a question, but my late husband was from Kingston, Ontario, so I have a soft spot for Canada! Sounds like you're having a great time! Enjoy! :hi:

10. Yep.
Ann is sort of the unofficial patron saint of Prince Edward Island because the author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, was from Cavendish - one of the prettiest places on PEI.
Ann rules the tourist economy: the play runs for weeks in the summer, some license plates have a braided red-headed Ann in the middle of the plate, there are Ann tee shirts, Ann wigs, Ann dolls, an Ann shop full of Ann souveniers, Ann soda and I'm sure other things I can't think of right now off the top of my head. If they could make a buck off Ann maxi pads I'm sure we'd see those in the drug stores...
That said, it's one of my favorite books ever. Ann is a true character!

12. My partner and I went up to PEI
and even though we'd never read the Green Gables books, we had a blast at the "Anne of Green Gables" house. While we were walking through the "Haunted Forest" (I think that's what it's called, and it is pretty creepy), something that looked like a crabapple came careening down out of the tree tops and nearly hit me. I must have jumped a foot! We went and saw the musical too, and had a ball.

But my question is, have you been to the beach in Souris? And do the sands really sing?
