KadeCarrion had seen it in the theaters a few times, and I had not seen it yet.
I am not a fan of musicals - 99% of them are cheese. Don't even get me started on the overrated hack Andrew Lloyd Webber. :puke: His work is an affront to music and good taste. Oops, sorry for the tangent! But anyway...
"Chicago" was good satire and showed that we haven't really come far at all from the decadent 20's. We're still a sick, celebrity and fame obsessed culture. Gere actually had a personality for once, probably the most pleasant surprise in the movie, and Zeta-Jones was credible enough, with great singing and icy stares to match. Since I am indifferent to the Oscars and their politics, it made no difference to me if she won, or the movie won - it makes no difference WHAT wins awards. I think people would enjoy movies more if they just watched it for it is, and not what others suggest it should be - which awards can do to some in the audience.
"Chicago" was good satire, and the one thing I liked is that it wasn't shot on film like most musicals are - it wasn't long periods of drama with sudden bursts into song. It did the more difficult task of making it look like the stage version (or I should say A stage version, since it is my understanding that it is quite different when in its original element), plus extrapolating the story from Roxie's POV. It flowed. The cinematography was great, and it sounded fantastic, but then, I have a 7 speaker surround system, lol. :-)
If any of you have the DVD, watch the deleted number "Class", a duet between Zeta-Jones and Latifah that kicked ass. It is a raw, vulgar, ironic number, and it was mainly cut because it took place outside of Roxie's imagination. But I wish they kept it in anyway.
So I wouldn't say it was my favorite of 2002, but I enjoyed it, and to me the choreography was convincing enough - Kade is a dancer, so her opinion has weight with me when she praises those scenes. Dancers must be some the hardest workers in the business.
So no flames on the movie here.
