Free beer if you vote?
I'm basically going to live in a multicultural, liberal Democratic house this school year. I finally get to live with my three friends, and they are all flaming Democrats for Kerry.

So this one guy's parents are well to do but still Democrats and his parents really want to get out the vote amongst young people. So they offered to buy kegs if we throw a party and have free beer for anyone who can prove they voted on election day. We won't cut off Bush and Nader voters but we'll definitely target Kerry people to invite. Tons of young people will vote for free beer.

What do you guys think? This could become like a national grass roots thing. (with Kerry supporters chipping in for the kegs) And if you don't want to have it on a Tuesday, you can wait until the weekend.

This could make a difference in the swing states. (We'll probably do ours in Ohio)

1. Long as no one tries to drive home and get the parents sued
That could get nasty. Otherwise, sounds like a great idea. Have an election night camp-out bonfire with kegs.

3. I second that
The only problem with there being a camp out is that it will be November and probably pretty chilly in Ohio.

How about this. Those who will be partaking in many beers must have a designated driver. Or have the party at a place large enough to accomodate everybody who's attending for the night. People can bring their own bedding.

2. Any port in a storm, I guess...
but is buying votes really such a good idea?

Parties are always a good idea, but perhaps the focus should be celebratory over Kerry's win, not so much as a reward for helping it happen.

And, how do you prove you voted? Or for whom? Around here we don't get receipts for voting.

Just as an historical side note, many places long had bars closed on election day after it became a scandal that ward heelers would spend a bundle buying votes with drinks.

6. They don't have to prove they voted for Kerry
but there's probably some way to prove they voted. Like some paperwork, or a registration form or something. And absentee ballots always have paperwork.

4. Long as it ain't Coors
it sounds like a good idea. But there's no need to support right wing fascists in the name of get out the vote.

9. Make sure you can PROVE that you're not buying votes.
For instance, make sure that there's at least one big Bushie there who would be willing to testify that everyone who voted was invited.

A lot of wards have little "I voted!" stickers they give you afterward. It's not necessarily ironclad proof that they voted, but it should be sufficient.
