My mom had emergency bypass surgery this morning...
I got the call right as I got into work this morning. Her prognosis is very poor.
I'm at a loss ... completely.
I'm leaving first thing tomorrow.

9. My Dad had surgery last Friday.
He spent 6 days in the ICU, but is now in a heart surgery ward and improving every day. They are actually beginning to talk about him coming home...

Please hold on to your hope, and please know that no matter how bad it looks when they have all those tubes and whatnot, that they can and often DO get better.

I doubt they'd have done surgery at all if they seriously felt your Mom was not gonna get better or lead a better quality of life after a bypass. This is seriously creepy stuff and people frequently get so freaked out they don't hear any optimism at all when they are talking to the Docs. I'm hoping that is the case for your mom.

My heart to you and yours, and feel free to get hold of me if you need to vent to someone who understands and has been thru it recently.

Laura

12. sending good thoughts...been there, I know it's scary
Both of my parents had emergency bypass surgery in a 3 month period. My dad is much older and hit a few rough spots, but he's good now and exercises an hour or more every day -- he's still a bit underweight, but he's fine. My mother came through very well although she was near death -- they said she would have been gone in a week if they hadn't done the surgery. This surgery can be a real life-saver and quality of life saver. I'll be thinking of your mom and hoping for good news.

18. I'm sorry to hear that. I'll say prayers for both of you.
Bypass surgery has gotten to the point that it's practically "routine surgery." Many people recover and go on to live full lives for a long time. Though they usually don't last quite that long, my father's bypass lasted more than 20 years! Do your best to stay strong for your mom.

25. Amaya....
One should consider emergency bypass surgery a GOOD thing. The alternative is sudden death.

This means a serious problem was found and treated. It's nasty surgery, but mainly because of the damage done to the leg and sternum, not the heart. It's painful the first few days, but gets better quickly. My dad had it years ago and it saved his life. My bf's father had it last year and he's doing great.

Best wishes you you and Mom.
