Edgar Martinez of the Seattle Mariners is retiring
He is announcing his retirement at the end of the season today.

It's massive amounts of chocolate for me and   .

We love you, Edgar, and it won't be the same without you.

1. It's sad, but it's time.
He's not playing like himself this year. I wish he'd stuck to his guns and retired after last year -- the memories would've been better.

2. We'll miss you, Edgar.
He was one of the few talented Mariners who didn't get caught up in the orgy of "let's trade away all our talent!" the M's got into over the last few years.

3. Greatest Mariner ever
I love Edgar, he is truly Mr. Mariner. The only good thing about him coming back this year is that he was able to get his 300th homer and his 500th double.

4. My last sports hero.
Thank you Edgar Martinez.

I'm watching my tape of the 1995 ALDS game 5 right now.
That double still makes me tear up.

5. The bat heard round the world
I realize that there are bigger sports stars. I also realize there are many more famous. Then there's Edgar Martinez, the thinking woman's hunk, a player that always gives 110%, who redefined the game in Seattle.

>That double still makes me tear up.<

I cry everytime I see it, too. I am so sad today that Edgar never got that World Series championship. God knows he deserves it.

6. I still remember watching that game
with my dad in the living room. My mom let us eat with our plates in our lap while sitting on the couch.

When Edgar hit the ball down the line off of Jack McDowell we both dumped fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans all over the carpet.

It was still the best meal I've ever eaten.

12. I remember the sheer JOY and EXHILIRATION
And utter ECSTASY and a million other things I felt in that moment Edgar won the game. It was meant to be. Baseball outdid itself when the '95 Mariners rose from the ashheap of their own history. They didn't rise to greatness in an oridnary fashion. It was the MY OH MY of MY OH MY's! I can tear up just writing about that game, that crystalline moment of pure magic.

8. One of the greatest hitters of all time...
and a joy to watch. He is a professional, quiet, humble giant, and he will be missed. A most likely hall of famer, although probably not on the first ballot.

9. I saw him hit a game-winning grand slam... bottom of the 9th.
It's the single greatest baseball memory I've got.

11. I love Edgar to death
He may very well be the last athlete I will EVER say that about.

Class.

Loyalty.

Discipline.

Good humor.

Team player.

Great hitter.

Humanitarian.

That is very sad news indeed. #11 should be retired as soon as possible, and I think the HOF should make him their first DH inductee. He made me a convert on the rule, as I was a hardcore NL fan growing up, before moving to AL-town Seattle.

Ed-grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! What a career, what a person. I sure wish the Mariners could have sent him out on a better note. But he is too classy to complain. Always was.

14. I know, I'm soo sad.
He's one fine ballplayer, one great human being. He's the kind of athlete that has kept the love of fans steady even when baseball itself has had a bad name.

I wish him success in his retirement.

>(Hi Julie - :hi: we miss you in the mod forum, I know you're probably having the time of your life with your business venture!)<

I miss you all something horrible, too. If the admins are game, I'll sign up again, because I can't imagine being anywhere else on Election Night ;-).

In the meantime, I'm happy for Edgar's wife and kids, they'll have him back where he belongs. I'm sad, though, for the fans of Seattle, who had the best example of what a professional athlete should be during his entire career. Let's hope one of the whippersnappers follows in Edgar's footsteps, as a competitor and a role model.

Julie

Certainly not the prima donnas like KG Jr & A-rod. Will certainly miss him. One more reason not to hang 'round Safeco Field...

19. real fans all over the country appreciate him
I have noticed over the past 5 or 7 years or so, that when the Mariners are the visiting team, Edgar gets a positive reception from the opposing fans. Louder applause, respectful treatment in their press.

The real fans know. He is not a headline-grabbing loudmouth or badboy. He posts journeyman numbers each season - although he did win the batting title in the AL twice in the 90's, and those were the leading numbers in the majors too.

The real fans know his class and skill. I always took pride that they noticed, like we did.

My oh my.

you've just shown us definitive proof of the prejudice of the east coast sports news press corps -- or both.

22. I'm glad I kept my tix for this weekend's series with the Yankees.
One last chance to shout out to Edgar.

It's likely that the organization will hire him on as a hitting coach in the minors, and that can't be bad.
