2. Zomby, thank you

We bought tickets today for the October 2nd game; we'll be there for every evilDU'er who loves Edgar. I'll be packing a big box of Kleenex (and all my memories, especially 1995 and 2001,) to the ballpark.

One of my more bizarre memories: Jay Buhner once said about Edgar, "Gar got in a race with a pregnant woman and came in third." Let's face it, he wasn't fast. He has a hell of a bat, though.

ESPN said earlier that Bucky (whoever he is,) could be Edgar's heir apparent. I yelled back at the TV, "Bucky is no Edgar Martinez!"

Julie

p.s. For those who think that professional athletes are pigs and moneygrubbers, Edgar actually took a pay cut to remain in Seattle all these years.

3. I know I would cry
Hell, Buhner's ceremony at Safeco made me cry, lol.

A fact worth mentioning is that Edgar started with the Mariners with their FARM ORGANIZATION. From 1983 in the minors on up until now, a true blue Mariner.

Think of all those frustrating seasons with not one winning year.

Then 1991, and the loser tag was shed.

Then another disappointment in '92 as the bad ol' days returned.

But Lou came along, and things looked up.

The strike in the middle of '94 hurt the game, and it was a long ways off from Opening Day of '95.

'95 was a lackluster season.

Until August that is.

The albatross was effectively put to rest by the bat of that humble man from Puerto Rico.

We all know the rest. In true Mariner heartbreak fashion, no World Series. But I wouldn't trade my memories for anyone else's, and like Edgar, I remain loyal.

As far as his running goes, consider how many doubles he got, and it makes you wonder if he would have set the all-time triples record with speed like Ichiro's.

Mariners fans learned that speed has its place, but so does a well-swung bat.

There will never be another like him in baseball, and that in itself adds to the bittersweet pungence of his pending retirement.
