Are you currently, actively trying to improve yourself?
The "does cursing bug you" thread started this. I answered that it bugs me coming from myself, but I can't work on it right now -- one thing at a time for me.

This question is asked regarding only as you see yourself. Who cares how others see you? That's not the point of this thread. If there's nothing about you that you think needs improving -- great!

By "improve" I mean, primarily, are you taking steps to improve your health, your vocabulary, your education, your game (whatever it is -- physical, such as tennis, or mental, such as chess), etc.? Are you reading more? Watching your weight? Trying to quit smoking? Trying to quit swearing? ;)

There's a world of things I can't think of at this moment that might be applicable.

I'll start: I'm losing weight. I'm 41 and will never bear children, so it's time I stopped eating for two. (Ha!)

10. I am constantly trying to
improve myself. I have always been trying to expand my horizons...it's kind of an addiction for me. I read a lot, listen to audio CD's on everything from spirituality to finances to health and wellness.

At the moment, I'm trying to improve my eating habits and get more exercise (besides running around at the hospital). I'm also trying to harness my finances.

It's always something!:-)

11. I'm trying to focus more on other people.
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 09:14 AM by fudge stripe cookays
For a good deal of my life I was too caught up in my own problems to really help other people.

Lately, I've found myself volunteering more of my time and efforts into helping others. Voter registration drives in underprivileged neighborhoods, trying to educate young women so they know about choice, and I'd like to do some work with Habitat for Humanity. I think it's making me a better person. :-)

The escort thread this morning also made me consider becoming a clinic escort. Thanks ya'll! :hi:

The weight thing is something I'm always working on, but it has to take a backseat right now.

12. working on several things:
- learning Italian (planning a trip to sicily)
- learning to play chess (my husband enjoys it and I thought it would be fun to do together)
- relearning the accordian (I'm 50, played when I was a child)
- experimenting with watercolors (not really artistic, but I would like to do something creative, just for myself -- I like the pretty colors!)
- training for a sprint triathlon (I used to have "loosing weight" as a goal, but I think event related training is more motivational)

14. Can't stop taking classes... I'm addicted
I feel a compulsion to learn how to do everything that interests me. This past year I passed the Master Gardener program, I make my own soap, I sew dance/figure skating costumes, I can Ballroom Dance, etc. etc.

To me, a course catalog is almost as exciting as a clothing catalog :). I haven't figured out whether this compulsion is due to ADD or the fact that my father died at 32 and my mother died at 46 (I'm 47) and I am trying to pack in everything that I can.

17. Yes, in a few ways.
I have gotten back on a healthy diet and joined a gym. So far I have lost about 20 pounds, and my blood pressure has improved from 141/90 to 126/76.

I recently transferred to a new job, less stressful, and with more chance for advancement.

I am working on paying off debts to get more financially stable. When I get my books in order, I am hoping to go to graduate school and/or Peace Corps (a post here at DU inspired me to look into Peace Corps, and I am attending an info session about it tonight!).

I have also drastically cut back on alcohol, which had become a bad habit. I reduced my drinking by about 80%, and am 3/4 of the way through a 30-day abstinence period. This is also a big money saver!!!

19. Let's see....
I'm losing weight. I walking 4 miles just about every day. I pay attention to nutrition and only eat those foods that postively affect my body.

I'm looking for a job. That's a biggie. Can't do much else without it, like the grad school I want.

20. I am on a continual path of self-actualization.
I don't know if the journey ever ends to improve ourselves in one way or another. I lost that weight and figured out what works best for me to be healthy and keep it off. I'm redefining my career path and working toward another degree. I'm in the process of ending, what has been, at least for the last 6 or 7 years, a marriage that's been very destructive for me. I see better things around the horizon in many avenues and it gives me a feeling of hope.

Best wishes on your own path and journey. :hippie: :D

27. Yep
Trying to get back to caring about myself. I used to be very physically active, and ate healthy, and all that. Got into a bad relationship and focused all my energy on making sure my kids were getting enough exercise, eating right, etc. Stopped caring what happened to me. It's bothered me that I'm not practicing what I preach anymore, so that's changing now. :)
