I used myself as a guinea pig. Want to hear the results?
The past three months or so, I would listen to right wing radio in the morning on my way to work. I would switch between Imus and Neal Boortz.

When I went to pick up lunch, I'd tune into Boortz and/or Liddy.

On my drive home, I'd tune into Hannity.

Now I tune into The Tom Joyner Morning Show, and the rest of the time I listen to music -- soft rock, 80's classics, and R&B.

The time I was listening to the right, I was so angry!!

I mean, I was a real bitch.

I always had a chip on my shoulder, but didn't know why.

I intentionally tried to start fights with people, and I was always on the defensive.

I'm mellowing out now. I can think clearer. and faster. and easier.

The moral of the story, boys and girls -- Hate Radio Hates. It makes you hate. And it should be listened to sparingly. Very sparingly.

1. You're a Masochist
Good god woman! Why would you subject yourself to that! Even in the name of science, some things are just too much to ask!

2. Hate radio...
makes you grind your teeth...my dentist was not happy with this, since I've got large fillings in all my lower molars, and this was grinding them down!
I usually listen to classical or jazz stations, or throw in a few cds when I'm sewing or cleaning.
Ahhh....much better! :)

3. Tom Joyner is great!
If his show is taped live anywhere nere where you live I highly recommend going to see it!

It is well worth standing in line at 5AM in the morning.

4. I still listen to Hannity on the way home
about a 15 minute ride. Hannity isn't on here on Mondays-some local financial advice show.

I don't know why because it is the same thing everyday. Over and over and over all wrong wrong wrong.

8. I also listen to Hannity on the way home from work.
That way I focus my anger at the radio and avoid road rage.

5. 10 minutes of Hannity & O'Lielly in that Outfoxed video...
...made my blood boil in ways I've never experienced before.

You should be nominated for sainthood. I couldn't tolerate any of those idiots for more than 2 minutes tops!

11. I would read the DU threads
about what Hannity said, and what Rush said.

So I tuned in for myself.

Thankfully, I've weaned myself off that crap.

But you're right - it's like watching a train wreck.

I signed up with Media Matters as one of their right wing radio watchers.

I don't know if I can go back to it, tho.

It's too nice being away from those idiots spewing their venom and bile.

The sad part is they are manipulating whole segments of society with that filth.

12. I spent 10 years arguing with Freepers on the Internet
and some wonder why I'm so contentious.

Their hate is radioactive, with a half-life of forever

13. That's very interesting
Although I would consider you to be more sane than the majority of people who listen to this kind of programming, it is interesting that it had such a visceral effect on you. Imagine the hostilty you felt well up from inside you multiplied by the number of listeners of these programs, and you get a insight into why things have gotten so nuts.

As has been said many times -- right wing talk radio is all about emotions, and has nothing to do with thinking.

By evoking powerful emotional responses, it motivates people who would otherwise not get involved to *act.* They don't want people to *think* -- they want them to accept that the "authority" (Rush, Heniousity, etc) is the one who does the correct thinking -- their job is to magnify his voice with a million "ditto!"s and to be his agents on the streets and in their towns and office places.

It has the feel of a Nazi rally -- arousing anger and feelings of righteousness, and the sense that one is being set out like a falcon in order to redress the grievances of the authoritative voice. Sure, there are more outrageous voices out there (i.e. genuinely Nazi groups) but the talk radio audience captures the spirit of the Nazi rally at the height of their popularity like nothing else.

Where do people think all this anger and hatred are going to go?

The extremist Republicans always manage to find a point in space halfway between any two points, and are always finding new enemies. First, COmmies were destroying America. Then terrorists. Then Democrats. Now we see moderate Republicans beginning to be thus demonized. They are trapped in this mind set -- they will always be creating and seeking to destroy their "enemy du jour". Their brains are hard-wired for it -- just like your cats' brains are hard-wired to spot small quick motions because they are instinctively predators.

18. Did it cause you to eat more?
I have a nervous habit and I eat. I couldn't listen to them unless I had some food in my hands and I was munching at the same time that I was listening to them.

That must have been torture.

19. YES!!!!!!
and I'm not fond of sweets, but I found myself eating lots of cake and pie.

SERIOUSLY!!!!

Haven't touched any since I let that crap go -- even tho there's always plenty of birthday cakes and such at work.

That's a very interesting observation.
