7. I did, but I finally beat it
Thanks to the American Lung Association's "Freedom From Smoking" booklets.

It looks like they may have moved FFS online now:

https://www.kintera.org/site/apps/kb/home/login.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=38973&membershipreq=83912&targetURL=%2Fsite%2Fpp%2Easp%3Fc%3DdvLUK9O0E%26b%3D22933

But I bet you can still get the booklets.

They have the 70 page "Freedom from Smoking" book here:

http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=44456

You'll have some homework to do, but it's a very positive and affirming program, and it beats the fuck out of smoking goddamned cigarettes.

If you're like me, you may have to do the course more than once, but you'll eventually beat it for good.

Best wishes.

on edit:

lordy, i suck. I guess I would recommend this one more for starters:

Freedom From Smoking® Self Help Manual (ALA Item #0055)-- This 46-page guide was developed by pulmonary physicians and American Lung Association staff to help people quit smoking. It is organized according to the various steps involved in the quitting process, from “Starting Out” to “Becoming a Non-smoker.” Each chapter contains short summaries of critical points, color photos, and interactive elements, such as checklists and quizzes. It also features a tear-out “Quitting Smoking Calendar” and “Pack Tracks,” which are small cards that help the soon-to-be ex-smoker track his or her smoking habit, and therefore, better understand how to avoid situations that could lead to relapse. At the end of the guide, there is a
“Certificate of Nonsmoker” to help celebrate the accomplishment.

18. Yes, but I just got
a prescription for the Nicotrol Inhaler. Haven' t filled it yet. I've tried the patch, the gum and cold turkey. I'm a weany and I love my butts, but I hate being a slave to the darn things-----making sure I have enough before I go home, enough to last until the morning, choosing restaurants with outdoor seating or a smoking area, avoiding travel to cities that don't allow smoking in bars, having to go outside to smoke at non-smoking friends homes and on and on and on. Then there's the health thing.

I'm hoping that the inhaler will solve two problems: sucking on and holding onto something.

21. Still an addict... but have quit.
Quit 3 weeks ago after smoking for three months after being quit for 7 months after smoking for two years after being quit for two years after smoking for 6 years....

On and off the wagon. Just like any other addict.

I am a nonsmoker. It's a tough thing though, most days. Last few, I'd kill for one, but I'm not gonna do it.

It's tough. There are days I wonder why the hell I quit - I'm still hacking, I'm still feeling like I can't exercise properly, I still have a diminished sense of smell. I sure as hell don't need any weight gain. (and yes, smoking not only kills your appetite, it burns calories. So I have to diet as WELL as quit. It sucks big ass rocks.)

But...

Sex drive is better, endurance is better (I just don't feel like it is), and my eyes are more stable when I'm not smoking.

But.... oh, man that dope calls me.

Pcat

37. Good luck, Camero...
My husband and I were total tobacco junkies until 2 years ago.
What did the trick for us? It was costing too damn much. With both of us smoking (in Michigan) we were spending about $20.00 PER DAY for smokes, and believe me, we could NOT afford it.
Luckily, a RiteAid down the street went out of business and was selling all stock for 70% off.
I bought a huge stack of cigarettes (weird brands like Old Gold, Lark, Luckies, whatever was left over at 70% off) and another stack of smoking cessation aids, gum and patches. The woman behind the counter looked at me like I was crazy. She said "What are you gonna do with these?"
I replied, "First I'm gonna smoke this stack, then I'm gonna quit". And you know what, IT WORKED. I got all the gum and patches for under $150.00. It had been killing me to have to spend more money for nicotine gum than a carton of cigs.
So, 2 years smoke free for both of us (it was our 3rd serious attempt at quitting)
My main philosophy for staying off the sticks, is that if I give in to temptation and smoke, it's not gonna kill the craving. I'll just want another one in 5 minutes. If I don't give in, the craving will go away and probably not resurface for another week or so. I'll take a craving a week over a craving every 5 minutes any day!

38. Cost is what finally got me to quit too
Of course it helps to live with a non-smoker too but the catalyst was the fact that the patch added up to about $30 per week while cigs added up to about $70 per week here in BC.

Florida was the reverse pretty much at $25 per week for smoking as opposed to $50 per week for the patch. Cheaper to kill yourself than to take care of yourself there unfortunately.

I'm glad to see you both finally broke free. It's my first attempt. I couldn't lay off of a cig for more than 12 hours before now.

23. smoking for 30+ yrs
I know it's not good for me. I know it's an addiction and I have more than enough addictions. I get ragged on by my 80+ y/o parents about it because they smoked too. If I had someone in my life that would give me a reason to try and extend my life, I'd quit in minute even though I enjoy it. My only goal right now is to make sure my parents live a happy and trouble free life for as long as they can.

41. As long as you're counting...
you're still a smoker trying to become a non-smoker.

Just choose to BE a non-smoker. Then there's nothing to count. I quit back in October some time. I don't recall if it was toward the beginning of the month or near the end. I simply have no reason to think about it anymore, let alone count the minutes!

As Robin Williams said in the movie "Dead Again", Are you a smoker or a non-smoker. Just decide which one you are and BE that.

Non-smokers don't count minutes. So stop TRYING to BECOME a non-smoker and just BE a non-smoker.

in Calif. If I ever move, it will have to be to another place with laws like CA. I'm spoiled rotten here. I never come in contact with anyone smoking. And for all you smokers, I'm not ragging on you. It's the smoke I can't stand. It stinks, number one. Which means you get near it, you have to wash all your clothing and your hair. ugh. Plus, I have allergies and the smoke makes them worse.

It's not that common in Vancouver. It's pretty much limited to outside. I know smokers who won't even smoke in their own homes.

Right now, you can't even smoke some places outside, but that's because we've had such a hot, dry summer.

I've cut down to about 4-8 cigs a day. Sometimes as much as a half a pack, but probably only every couple weeks or so. I often don't start feeling like I really need a cigarette until 3 in the afternoon anymore, so makes it easier.

40. I quit last October after 40 years
of giving money to rich Republican drug pushers.

I finally got smart. They're rich enough, and they aren't going to get any more of my money.

Now I look back on 40 years of stupidity and wonder how did I manage to lie to myself for that long? But that's what it takes to be a smoker, a constant stream of telling lies to oneself.

For 40 years I told myself "I can't quit." I had tried three or four times a year, every year for forty years. That's at least 120 times I tried to quit, and failed. So I kept saying to myself, "I can't quit, I can't quit. Wa wa wa! Poor me." That was the biggest lie of all.

Instead, I began telling myself "I am content to be a non-smoker." and that affirmation soon became the truth and I haven't even thought about smoking since then.

"I can't quit" is just the lie that gets you off the hook. But it's only yourself you're lying to.

have you considered American Spirits? they are more expensive (downside) but they last longer (I think the additive burn faster) and they are not owned by one of the big five. plus, they even have an organic blend!

look people, you justify your habit of drinking coffee, a beverage made from a crop basically stolen from rural villagers, and I'll justify my habit. In case you are wondering how much it would cost to add a real living wage to your pound of Starbucks? about 8 bucks. double the price. you in?
