Kiteboarder Ian Johnstone takes advantage of the high winds provided by Hurricane Charley as the storm's leading edge nears Fort Myers, Florida August 13, 2004. Hurricane Charley strengthened dramatically as it neared Florida's west coast on Friday with powerful 145 mph (233 kph) winds that sent tens of thousands of people scrambling to higher ground. Charley grew to a Category 4 hurricane capable of extensive damage to homes and buildings, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (news - web sites) said. It threatened to whip up a 14-foot (4.3m) storm surge that could flood low-lying areas around Tampa Bay and coastal communities to the south. REUTERS/Marc Serota
