Chicago-area DUers: Come to my friends' new bar tonight!
Hey, DUers: Some good friends of mine opened up a bar in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, and I am trying to convince people to come and support them. Can you imagine how scary it is to open a business these days? Come help them to make it though their first full week!

Last Saturday was an open mic jam, and it was so damn cool, you wouldn't believe it! Jazz piano and horn players jamming with reggae, dub and punk musicians--it was freakin' great.

Tonight is yet another open mic, and I'll be there to add a bit of goth/new wave to the mix. Even if you don't play an instrument, come hang out!

Here are the directions:

KITTY MOON: 6237 N. Clark. 312-927-5844. Corner of Clark and Thome; there isn't a sign up yet--it's a brand new club.

Freeform jazz/rock fusion. Too much talent for one bar. Cheap drinks. Let me know if you need more info!

1. The Chicago Meet-up is set for Sep. 5 at another bar...
Any incentive to move it there instead? Wanna check with your pals?

4. According to the Meetup site, the next DU meetup is on Aug. 18th
at "The Duke of Perth." If I'm still unemployed, I might go to that one.

However, I don't see anything about Sept. 5th; where is that one supposed to be held?

Anyway, I still would like to entice all Chicago DUers to come out to the Kitty Moon regardless of the meetup schedule. Do you think that I should try to schedule a Meetup myself?

6. The Sepember 5th meetup is on the home page. At Moody's...
tentatively, at least. That's the last I've heard.

And yes...do schedule a meetup. That'd be cool. :-)

11. Oh, hell yes! Mrs. Cat and I looooove Moody's!
I hope I can make it. That Tuesday is the start of school in the CPS, so if I actually have a job, I might have to spend that weekend getting ready. I'll try!

We should try to get a Meetup together at Kitty Moon for later in the month.

25. The reason prolesunited chose Moody's is ...
...so we can sit outside in the beer garden. Perhaps a Kitty Moon gathering in the fall when we want to be indoors?

8. Fiddler's Green? I'm not sure--a lot of those places have shut down
in the past few years. Hell, the Evil Shrub is even bad for local music! Rat bastard.

14. That would be great!
The whole thing kicks off at 9:00, but they are open at 6:00.

If you play an instrument, bring it! How often can amateurs play with seasoned pros? It is too cool for words.

7. Yep, I'll be walking there. I live down street, so why bother driving?
Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 03:02 PM by iconoclastic cat
This place is going to be very cool: they are going to install wi-fi, a giant movie screen, and they are going to start live webcasts of the major events in about 3 weeks.

But FIRST, they need people to show up!

BTW, the neighborhood is pretty laid back, so don't worry about being there late. Mrs. IconCat and I walk back home at 3AM with no problems.

On edit: Here's info on Yahoo maps:
N Clark St At W Thome Ave, Chicago, IL 60660 Save Address
Arriving at: N Clark St At W Elm St, Chicago, IL 60610 Save Address
Distance: 7.7 miles Approximate Travel Time: 15 mins

Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 03:17 PM by iconoclastic cat
Seriously, this is a great bunch of people. Where else could you find classical operatic singers doing shots with punk rockers? It's a blast!

On edit: I wouldn't recommend that she just come and sit by herself in a corner. This is one of those places that you bring some friends and hang out on one of the many plush couches (they don't have booths, just lots of couches).

That's a new one. Anyway, it's a really chilled-out little club, no pretentions, and I doubt that much political talk will occur. Feel free to come hang out.

23. I hate to pick....
...but that isn't Rogers Park. It is Edgewater.

I live a couple blocks away and pass it twice a day. So THAT'S what has been going in there.

Can't make it, but good luck to your friends.

I thought Ridge was the cutoff. Where does Rogers Park start? Sheesh--I live here and I don't even know.

I'm a couple blocks south of you in what is called Edgewater Glen -- for Glenwood and Glenlake streets.

Come on in one of these evenings! I'm putting together a blog with their performance calendar and everything; I should have it up soon. Next week, several people will be performing the works of Nina Simone! And at some point, they're having a film night.
