Okay: You have to show an outdoor movie. Which one?
Hi DU,

I'm in charge of picking the outdoor movie for our heavily Republican, mucho fundies hometown. I have been through hundreds of movies in the past few days, and I am absolutely torn.

I'd like to show "Seabiscuit". I think it's one of the better movies I've seen in years. "Seabiscuit," however, has some bad language, a very quick flash of nudity, and some violent fighting scenes.

Do you think I should go forward with it? Should I pick another movie? (Please don't suggest the black and white "classics"; I've already been told that people won't watch them.)

If I could show any movie, I'd show "Fahrenheit 9/11," but let's think "family friendly". What do you all think? HELP!

Julie

49. oh yeah think we have a winner !
This is a great movie and kid friendly too. If I recall correctly, there were 27 conures who played the part of "Paulie" alone, each one specializing in a different trick. I believe bird trainer Robbie Harris worked on this. A great movie and adults can appreciate it too...especially how time gets away from you...heck, they might appreciate the ending more than the kids.

i think seabiscuit would be fine, espeically if it is a PG. Otherwise i think good fundy family fun for an outside movie would be Grease, or something so bad it would be good like sargent peppers.

Hilarious movie that I won't get run out of town for. At the same time, I initially thought about showing "Princess Bride" and basically was told that "too many people have seen it" and "it's too boring".

How anyone could think that "Princess Bride" is boring is totally beyond me.

5. No classics? Really?
That sucks. At the Chicago Outdoor Film Festival they pack Grant Park for about 2 weeks showing classics - and it's definitely an all ages crowd. Something like "Manchurian Candidate" (original) you might especially be able to get away with, because of the remake out.

Remember the Titans is a good family movie.

The Princess Bride - long time fav family movie

The Three Amigos - reaching back will make the adults happy, and my son (8) thinks it's hilarious

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - I just like it

The Shawshank Redemption - my all-time favorite, but I can't remember what teh language is like

American History X - just kidding!

If you think there'll be families with younger kids there, I would go more comedy, because it'll keep their interest longer. My kids get bored with adult dramas they can't understand, and parents can't watch if they're explaining through the whole movie.

20. Okay, here were the classics I was mulling over
"Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" and "It Happened One Night".

"Mr. Smith" would be very appropriate in this election year. "It Happened One Night" is just plain funny. I saw it a couple of months ago on TCM; it's still a great movie.

In the meantime, thanks, everyone, for the suggestions; I'll be giving this even more thought!

Makes Caligula look like "Mary Poppins". If you ever get a chance, um, don't watch that movie. No, really. Don't. Hey- I said not to. Don't say I didn't warn you.

It was Pasolini's last film. After he had gone cerifiably insane.

Many years of being the regional manager for a chain of indie video stores.. I know my bad movies. That was probably the most disturbing piece of... cinema I've ever tried to watch.

Well, the first 'outdoor' movie that came to mind is an old one.

50. Hoosiers and The Grapes of Wrath are the most "American" films i know
i think myths evoke our best and our worst. the myths each film conjures up about America reflect our best and our worst.

i have often freaked out my republican buddies when watching Hoosiers by pointing out that the basketball team was a form of pure communism, where the team was more important than the individual and individual goals were subordinate the team goals.

even in that small indiana hamlet and in that migrant camp in california, people came together because they wanted to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

i think most americans have that feeling. i hope most people anywhere they live have that feeling.

not that the fundies will give a whit about that. But it is. George Clooney is hilarious in it.

There IS one scene where Jon Goodman kills a frog by squeezing it in his fist (not actually of course) then throws it up against a tree and that was a bit much. And cows get shot up by a gangster/bank robber.
