1. You bet!
His book Les Meteors was the first real study of the scientific aspects of weather. He also wrote groundbreaking treatises on optics, and numerous other things.

And the guy argued with Pascal that a vacuum didn't exist!

Queen Christina of Sweden was fascinated by him, so she wanted him to spend time up there. Sadly, I think the climate didn't agree too well with him, and he died of pneumonia, IIRC.
