What is your favorite foreign country?
Too many options to create a poll, but with the Olympics here, I think it's worth asking. What is your favorite foreign country?

Love the "Land of Fire and Ice". Reykjavik is a great city even though it is expensive. I think I'll go bathe and put on some of my Blue Lagoon mud mask.

Ireland would have to be my favorite, though. The sea, the mist, the mountains, the green, green, green. And the warm fuzzy feeling I had all the time I was there.

40. Meine Grossvater ist von Deutschland geborgen.
Saxony, Chemnitz... 1920. Many of his cousins survived WW2 (by hiding) and still live there. His father refused to join the Nazi party and escaped in 1930 and migrated to the US. Meine Grossvater then joined the USAF in 1938 and translated for the intelligence during the war.

44. Meine Oma
was in Czechoslovakia during the war and lost a husband during it. After the war, when the Russians took over they sent my Oma and her family to Germany (because of their German heritage). Much like the Jewish people, they had only minutes to pack and take only what they could carry. They were then dumped in a foreign war torn country with nothing but what they were able to gather. My Oma was pregnant with my mother at the time and since her fiance' was Czech, he had to stay behind. He tried to sneak across the border and was caught. They assumed he was killed. After the Iron curtain began to fall, my mother found out that her father was still alive, had married and she had 2 siblings!

My mother was raised by my Oma's 3rd husband who was captured during the war by the Russians, he too refused to become a Nazi. He was held for a year in a Russian style concentration camp and when the war was over was told to "walk home". I have thousands of war stories from my Oma and have visited Dachau. Her face still turns white when she hears sirens.

20. I've got two contenders
1. The Netherlands - The Dutch are the ultimate pragmatists, which is what I love most about them. They're bigtime capitalists, yet on social issues they're 30-40 years ahead of us.

2. Canada - Sort of like the U.S. in an alternate universe...except for Quebec, which is sort of like the U.S. in an alternate universe, but dubbed into French.

23. Spain
Of the countries I've visited, I would have to say Spain had the nicest people. That would be followed by Mexico. The Mexicans were the nicest folks, just like the Spanish were. Both countries have a lot of beauty, in the land and the people. Of course I would have to add that they both felt like home, since New Mexico has a little of both these countries in our culture & people., :hippie:

29. We live in Baja....
but I love England da bestus. Especially Sennen Cove. Baja is getting stranger and stranger - US Oil Companies are putting in LNG facilities up and down the coast, Fox was a disaster as a President, the corruption is unbelievable, the people suffer, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and the middle class, well, what's left of it, just barely holds on, human rights is a farce - editor of Zeta just murdered last month in TJ(one of thousands), TJ just elected one of the biggest drug-money launderers in the world for Major, Hank Rohn (barf),loads of rednecked good old boys from the USA down here pushing their weight around, and trying to cash in one way or another, alot of American cons, Ensenada Bay has just about the highest levels of PCP's in the world, and all the nice secret spots are being totally developed for golf courses for the rich Americans. I am frustrated with Mexico because she does not take care of her own people, and yet rates third in the world as Country with the most wealthy people, nobody pays income tax (only 20% do), that's why everything is so screwed up down here, among many others, there is no public education provided past the sixth grade,(keep 'em dumb) minimum wage is $4.00 a day, and that's usually a 12 hour day, decent health care is only for the wealthy, the polution is incredible, wonder why they all want to come to the USA? Will do Mulege and Loreto one last time in November....but I hear that Costa Rica is OUTASIGHT !

64. Cybergata, I didn't say you loved the government,
you know, I love the beautiful aspects of Mexico, like the Pyramids, Chiapas, Oaxcaca, Guanajuato, the art,the literature, the music, the people, the mystical. Our friends are mostly from the poorer class, I am a Godparent to two children and we've helped put kids through Secondaria. We both speak Spanish, and try to avoid American encampments. It is just totally different when you are living here though, one is exposed to the reality, not the myth. This society is extremely tribal and non-integratible. The Mexicans for the most part, are horrible to the Indigenous people, they use them for slave labor in the fields up and down the coast working 12-14 hours a day, little children, too, while getting sprayed with pesticides and living in absolute squalor. I am tired of "ni modo" and fatalism, and so was Octavio Paz. Perhaps this attitude is due to their ruthless and bloody historical lineage, but instead of 'helping' and being 'kind' to tourists, they need to start 'helping' and being 'kind'to each other. Come here sometime, and I will take you on a tour of the La Mesa and La Prensa areas where Jimmy Carter and Habitat For Humanity tried to help the people. You will see hundreds of thousands of people living in the most abject of poverty, open sewers, no water, no electric, no medical, shanty homes which get washed and flooded out each rainy season, very little good nourishment, squalor and disease, right on our Border. Then, I will take you to the rich section of town, where the upper classes live in mansions with bodyguards. This is the same story throughout Mexico. Right now, as we speak, many, many of the more educated young Mexicans want nothing more to do with the USA, they see us as a tyrant and Mexico locked into a symbionic relationship which is dependent on tourism. They want US out, completely, and to be able to develop their country on their own. Whether or not this movement grows, only time will tell. Beyond the smiles and the facade of happiness and romantic aura, you will find a very deep resentment of Americans, and a dysfunctional sense of Nationalism. By the way, don't go to Cancun, the reef has been trashed out, there have been numerous kidnappings, muggings and rapes and robberies, and the State Department has issued a warning to American tourists. It is also one of the big hangouts for the Cartels. Avoid it like the plague.
