1. Walking around the track during the Opening Ceremonies
they all looked bored and out of place, with major attitudes.

Serves 'em right.

4. And guess where we'll be recruiting players from from now on?
:) I bet they already are...I don't follow basketball if it's not girl's varsity and my daughter's on the team. :)

Hi Lisa! It's good to see you.

5. Yes they can. They dropped the restriction before the 88 Olympics I
believe. All pros play on the U.S. team.

Yes, they're all pros. They got their asses handed to them, and I'm glad.

11. James is at the Olympics
and why begrudge him, and others to make a pile of money when they can? This is a thing that annoys me, people who say about a pro athlete, "he should have gone to college, no future", etc. We are a capitalist society and if people are willing to 1- pay the athletes, and 2- pay to see the athletes, then who the hell am I or you or anyone else to deny these guys a chance to make a living? Baseball is full of guys who never went to college, football is full of guys who did, but are still not terribly intelligent. I challenge anyone to tell me honestly that they would have turned down mega-millions right out of high school. The USA basketball team has some problems, guys skipping college is the least of them.

13. i guess the main reason
is that i myself am in college, and i greatly resent the fact that anyone can make however many millions of dollars he has just by making a little ball go through a hoop. its probably stupid, and i know that i would have taken the money too, it just disgusts me to have to work my ass off all the time, and STILL have an assload of student loans that i will be paying for the next 20 years. not to mention, hes a crony of Maurice Clarett, who will have a special place in hell if i have anything to say about it, and some of the hate rubs off.

16. Because 1-it's just a game, and we shouldn't be paying so much
to go see it. Which is why I don't and 2. Bad attitude should be justification for getting bounced out of the league. I see more bad attitude than good from these yokels.

I long for the days when pro atheletes had to get a real job in the off season.

8. US basketball is a farce,
akin to the WWF. Same guys, millions spent for the hype. It isn't really a sport competition, but pure entertainment for your viewing enjoyment by hardened professional soulless actors.

of these guys run 8 to 10 steps before their layups. It really pees me off.

12. Our guys have no clue about zone defense.
Zone is a much better defense than man-to-man, because it REQUIRES teamwork. Our NBA gives us celebrity matchups, not team play.

20. my problem with putting a bunch of millionaires on the court . . .
and calling it an Olympic team is that it insults all of the athletes who really have to struggle and sacrifice to take part in the games . . . I hated the decision to allow pros into the games, and hate it even more as exemplified by the US hoopsters . . . my fondest wish is they get beat by some third world counry no one's ever heard of whose team is made up of real amatuers . . .

21. Contrast with the US women's team - dead serious from day one.
I still remember back in 1988, the US women's basketball team was deadly serious about winning the gold medal. They wore T-shirts with the slogan "SOLE GOAL - SEOUL GOLD"

These women know how to play like a TEAM.

22. I stopped watching the NBA years ago
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 10:11 AM by Chovexani
Sure, I will occasionally turn on MSG to get my heart broken by the Knicks (old masochism dies hard, I guess). But I have written off the NBA.

It's all about the WNBA for me. I was at the inaugural home game of the Liberty, and I go to as many games as I can. Next summer I'm getting season tickets (I didn't this year because I didn't think it was worth it, stupid Repukes are making them play at Radio City because of the convention). First of all, you don't have to take out a second mortgage even for nosebleed seats--for $100 Mr. Chovexani and I sit practically on the floor. Not 100 each, 100 between the 2 of us. You can't even sit on the *roof* of a Knicks game for that.

And the games are just way more fun to watch. The women play as a team, they don't showboat, and there is some serious athleticism going on (don't let the detractors fool you!). It's also a very international league. Our Liberty center is playing for Team Russia in Athens, and there are a lot of Aussies too (who Mr. Chovexani always screams loudly for at every game, regardless of what team they play for, and sometimes that really gets us into trouble lol). No drunken morons spilling beer all over you too--you get your overenthusiastic fans (like me :P), lots of families with kids. It's just a good time.

Remember there wouldn't even have been a WNBA had it not been for the absolutely stellar show the women put on in 1996 at the Atlanta Games. There weren't any egos, they were there to work hard and represent us as best they could. And boy did they ever. I still get teary eyed when I think of Lisa Leslie & Co. standing on the podium back then.

Bottom line: NBA = overpaid primadonnas, WNBA = true athletes
