can dogs have asthma?
My little bud seems like he might have it. What can you do for them?

1. I had a cat who did
We gave him an inhaler with a tube-like attachment you can use on infants. He took it pretty well. He also took oral prednisone for it. I'm sorry to hear about your little bud. I hate seeing animals be sick. :(

3. thanks!
That's what it seems like. He has these wheezing spells. My best guess is asthma. It's not too often. Just every now and then.

2. Yeah, poor puppy.
On the bright side, it's better than many other medical conditions!

A pill a day should keep it away.

4. I guess I better call Dr. Threadgill
And ask him for some of those pills. Thanks for the input!

5. Yep
It would be a good idea to take your dog to the vet for allergy tests. I had a cat with asthma, which turned to other problems. Allergy tests showed the poor little guy had 45 environmental allergies and food allergies to the point he could only eat chicken, turkey and venison.

If your dog has allergies, I'm guessing it's going to be easier to give him the monthly shots than it was to give them to this cat. 5 mg of Valium didn't calm him enough to stay still for them. (Yes, the vet prescribed it.)

6. yeah, I guess it could be allergies
He seems to sneeze a lot, compared to other dogs I've had.

But if we get him Valium, he's going to need to hire a watchdog to keep me out of his stash -- at least when Bush is on tv. :D

10. Well,
If he's good about trips to the vet and taking allergy shots (if that is the problem), he won't need the Valium. So you'll just have to change the channel or drink heavily.

7. We had a dog
a black Lab who we thought had asthma. It got very severe and none of the meds worked. We almost had to put her down but after a week at the vet he suggested I take her to the nearest vet school about 65 miles away. We made the trip, lab in the backseat with my boys and a container of O2. Turned out she had laryngeal paralysis. It is common in Labs. They did a surgery that held open one flap of the laryngeal flaps. She was a million bucks after that. We had to be careful that she did not drink too fast and she could no longer swim but she lived for about 3 years before she died at age 16. Funny part was she always was very hoarse sounding and when she would bark she sounded like an old lady with emphysema. What a great dog she was. RIP Tootie my old friend.

8. Didn't know that you have a dog...
Learn something new every day I guess. Our dogs have sneezing spells once in a while, nothing serious though.

12. he weezing like just after eating fast or somethign?
or when paniced/excited? mine used to have this problem, it involves an airway or something collapsing partially (they still get air), and its not harmful to them its just kinda scary. if its this just try and calm em down and the muscles should relax and it should stop, at least for then, no real cure for that. but it might not be your dog's problem either.

15. it seems pretty random
He just started doing it a few minutes ago when I posted this question. He was in the next room, relaxing, and he just started doing it. He hasn't eaten in about six or seven hours.

17. thanks for that!
I don't know why I didn't google it. It just seemed more natural to ask my friends at DU.

It's sounds pretty negative though. Good news is my dog isn't getting skinny. :)

18. If he is old, it could be the beginnings of CHF
(congestive heart failure)

I hope that is not it.. Our dog got that when she was getting up there in years..so did a cat of ours.. They can treat it by removing the fluid buildup near the heart, but eventually, you must let them go..

Fingers crossed for your vet visit :).. asthma is much more treatable..:)
