My daddy was a cop on the east side of Chicago
:D :spank: Matcom :spank:

Back in the U.S.A. back in the bad old days

In the heat of a summer night
In the land of the dollar bill
When the town of Chicago died
And they talk about it still
When a man named Al Capone
Tried to make that town his own
And he called his gang to war
With the forces of the law

I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!

And the sound of the battle rang
Through the streets of the old east side
'Til the last of the hoodlum gang
Had surrendered up or died
There was shouting in the street
And the sound of running feet
And I asked someone who said
"'Bout a hundred cops are dead!"

I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!

And ther was no sound at all
But the clock upon the wall
Then the door burst open wide
And my daddy stepped inside
And he kissed my mama's face
And he brushed her tears away

The night Chicago died
Na-na na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na
The night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!

The night Chicago died
Na-na na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na
The night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!

The night Chicago died
Na-na na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na
The night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!

5. nah, there are some "east" street numbers.
and don't forget about snooty Streeterville over there with Navy Pier, Fox and Obel, Lake point towers and a slew of fancy hotels.

7. I love the streeter history
imagine sitting atop a garbage dumb YOU created, toting your shot gun, keeping the greedy chicago aldercreatures from getting your land.

what a classic. Only in Chicago.

22. yeah great story... sad ending...
It could almost be a fable don't you think? His daughter sold him out on his death-bed. Its a story, and lesson, of how no matter how hard you try... there are those out there who will sell you out for mere pennies (well in her case, thousands of dollars in 1900's cash).

8. Interesting piece of nonsensical fiction.
I could never quite figure it out myself.

For starters, there really is no East Side in Chicago. There are addresses that have the word 'East' in them...but nobody ever says the East Side. The Southeast Side exists, even the West Side exists, but I've never heard anybody mention the East Side.

Secondly...who are these supposed 'hoodlum gangs' and why would they start a blood riot with the CPD??? Capone's boys knew better than to mess with the cops. One hand washes the other.

For those and many other reasons, that song really sucks.

11. Paper Lace were from Europe
They didn't know anything about Chicago or the real history of the event they were pretending to sing about. They were a bunch of Eurohippie musicians! Expecting historical accuracy from a bunch like that is as silly as expecting moral leadership from professional athletes. Oops!

16. Well how ta do.....My Daddy was a motor-cop in Santa Monica
really :-)
He even once got to shake the hand of the then Senator JFK when he was running for the presidency way, way back in 1960.

Is your Daddy still alive? Mine isn't. He was killed in Nov. 1960 when I was just a baby.

18. HI... haven't seen you in a while!
My dad died in '98 but was hurt in '63 and had to retire.

He was mainly in the harbor division from about 1950 to '63. Ended up being a homicide detective.

Funny... I wonder if they knew each other?? Too bad we can't ask them :-(

Sorry that you lost your dad so early.. How awful.

20. Hi..... I've been busy with stuff
My Pa would have been 74 this year. I can't recall for sure but I think he joined up around 1954, but wouldn't be a hoot if we found out they knew each other. My second Daddy made up amazingly for the loss of my first Pa and he's still with us :bounce: It's all good :-)

that would be wild if they knew each other. One thing they had in common is their wonderful democratic daughters :-)

Good to hear your second dad was good and is still here!
