Puppetry Of Penis Not Banned In Chicago

Conservative critics have managed to get the touring comedy show "Puppetry of the Penis" banned in Boston, but they've struck out in Chicago.

Chicago police are declining to shut down the return engagement of the show, which bills itself as "the ancient Australian art of genital origami," opening today at the Lakeshore Theater, 3175 N. Broadway. Before audiences filled mostly with wide-eyed young women, two male performers manipulate their private parts into a variety of shapes.

"People buying tickets know what they are in for before they go into the theater," said police spokesman Dave Bayless. "There's nothing taking place ."

That argument infuriates Arlene Sawicki of Citizens for Community Values, who last week attacked the show in an opinion piece in the Illinois Leader, a conservative Web site. Stating that "according to the Chicago Municipal Code, the play is illegal and subject to enforcement," Sawicki urged readers to voice their complaints by calling police and the mayor's office. She noted that the Lakeshore is "in the middle of Chicago's homosexual community."
