A new career move may be on the horizon....
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 05:23 PM by HEyHEY
Wether you know it or not, I got in to journalism because I wanted to go into radio. Well, there is a possible oppurtunity with a station in a wicked town in BC with a population of about 32,000. They offered it to my friend but she just started somewhere else, she got offered the job through a contact. So, her contact said the station manager was going to call her anyway. She will still turn it down, but recomend me.

Naturally this (should I be offered the job) presents and ethical dilema. The company I work for wanted a two-year commitment. But I'm in print, I want to be in radio, and a break like this may never come again. Plus staying in print so long could hurt my chances of radio. I don't really care about smearing my reputation among the print companies because I wouldn't want to go back to print.

What do you folks figure? Would it be a really terrible thing to drop out of my current job as not to possibly screw my chances of radio for a "commitment" with a major corp?

1. Take the opportunity if offered
I think you should give as much notice as possible, train the next person, and do everything possible to make it easier for your employer. You do not owe two years. If you get the job, just say it's a once in a lifetime opportunity that you did not plan for.

3. Go for it.
Your first responsibility in matters like this is to yourself. Enter the world of radio and improve it. Even the CBC could use more leftifying.

4. Two things....First, GO FOR IT!!!! This is what you want to do...
You only get one life dammit. You're not an indentured servant. Resign, professionally, but resign.

Number 2...Prepare for a life of poverty. I worked in radio news/board work after college for about two years. One of my best friends gave it 20 years. I sucked so I never made more than minimum wage (and I was overpaid at that). He, however, was really good. Wound up as PD of a major station in a town of 100,000, metro area 300,000. Didn't make NEARLY enough money to justify the stress. Media buyouts eventually cost him even that POS job.

Whatever, good luck and I wish you the best.

7. $300 a month more doing what you want to do and you have to ask...
"Should I?" Hell, man, start packing.

6. The other kinda sucky thing is
Her "Contact" knows me and would probably give me a good reference. But he is good friends with my boss, so I don't wanna even try going there.

Rats eh?

8. Hey HEyHEY if the opportunity is offered....
Take it, you never know if it will come again. You would be great on radio, and then I could listen to your melifluous tones on the internet.
