Are there any Tom Paxton fans here?
Whose garden was this? It must have been lovely. Did it have flowers?
I've seen pictures of flowers, and I'd love to have smelled one.
Whose river was this? You say it ran freely. Blue was it's color.
I've seen blue in some pictures, and I'd love to have been there.

Tell me again I need to know. The forest had trees, the meadows were green.
The oceans were blue and birds really flew. Can you swear that it's true?

Whose gray sky was this? Or was it a blue one? You say there were breezes.
I've heard records of breezes and I'd love to have felt one.

Tell me again I need to know. The forest had trees, the meadows were green.
The oceans were blue and birds really flew. Can you swear that it's true?

Whose garden was this? It must have been lovely. Did it have flowers?
I've seen pictures of flowers, and I'd love to have smelled one.
Tell me again I need to know, tell me again I need to know.
Tell me again I need to know, tell me again I need to know.

1. What a great night on DU for personal cultural touchstones!
One thread cites Eugene Burdick's "Ninth Wave," and now Tom Paxton and "Whose Garden Was This."

I'm reliving my 60's childhood!

"Last Thing on My Mind," anyone?

3. I have a cover by Arlo Guthrie of one of his tunes
"I Am Changing My Name To Chrysler"

Funny song.

4. I love the Chad Mitchell Trio, who did a lot of his songs
A few of my favorites (I can only find credits for three of their albums so I'm sure I'm missing a lot of Paxton songs):

Dubarry Done Gone Again
The Marvelous Toy
I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound

They did a lot of Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, too, but unfortunately never made the big time... Peter, Paul and Mary, Roberta Flack, and We Five all scored big with songs that the Mitchell Trio had recorded first.

After Chad Mitchell left the band got a kid by the name of John Deutschendorf, or as he's better known, John Denver. John went on the better things but the Trio, alas, never did.
