2. You're just focused on the "real' race...
That for the "Presidential Gold Medal"!:D

Actually, these games have "grown" on me..the more I watch, the more real human drama takes over from all the crap about security...here's hoping these Games can stay that way!:7

B-)

3. Actually I do
I kind of took a pass 4 years ago, but I watched the Atlanta Olympics 8 years ago. I have been watching a little every day. Men's and women's gymnastics, a little track and field, beach volleyball and swimming. I even watched a little boxing. The thing I like about the Olympics is that it gives us a chance to watch the sports that are routinely ignored by the national sportswriters. It's good to see something else on TV other than baseball, basketball, football, golf and NASCAR. The Olympics remind us that many sports predate our most popular American sports.

4. I never even made an attempt
when people name names of olympians with the assumption everybody knows what they are talking about, I don't have a clue...

5. Zero here too and I feel a little guilty about it...
I even taped the opening ceremony, but have no real desire to watch it... I used to really enjoy them, but I'm just not into it this year-- something about seeing our wonderful young athletes being marched out as yet one more exploited symbol of our "imperialistic greatness" and among a world that has little more than thinly veiled contempt for us, given the Bushies* arrogance-- just sort of takes the fun out of it. This is especially true, since I know the coverage is so focused on our own athletes to the near exclusion of the rest.

8. I think you hit it- at least explaining why it's different this year
With Bush trying to capitalize on the games- makes me sick.

6. I don't care because I feel so ashamed of the US right now......
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 10:59 PM by northstar
I'm even MORE ashamed when my friends in western Europe, et al, know all about the best contestants from (non-US) countries....and I don't know *anything* about them....US media only focuses on US players and not on THE BEST PLAYERS - WHEREVER THEY ARE FROM! The US media forgets that America always loves 'an underdog'....not because they are 'less', just b/c they pulled 'up to the front' from unlikely circumstances.

I can't watch the Olympics b/c I totally DESPISE the US coverage of it!!!! I hate the commercials, etc.....US coverage totally ruins the true 'spirit' of the games.

7. Look over there people........................
it's a really cute little gymnast!!!!!!! And look over there...........that guy sure can run fast, huh??? I for one have paid little attention to the BREAD AND CIRCUSES. I prefer to focus on what Caesar and the other Romans are up to.

9. Used to be cool, but its not about sports anymore
Its all about the USA proving its worth against the rest of the world.

Right now we have a black eye because of Bush. And winning a softball game, impressive as it is, isn't going to fix that.

10. I have always looked forward to / had interest in the Olympic games ...
but this time around , I could care less . I watched the gymnastics , swimming and track & field events without even wanting to root for anyone . I think all of my excitement was for the DNC and by the time the Olympics came around , I did not care .

13. for me
its seeing an athlete achieve his or her lifelong dream like tonight when the Moroccan finally won gold or the woman runner from the US getting gold when the Canadian fell. Being an ex-athlete I love to see their emotions.

14. I haven't been watching,
Though the gymnastics are always good. I prefer the Winter Olympics, since I feel that they require more skill, though I was accused on an earlier thread, of just preferring events that depend on gravity, bobsled, luge, downhill skiing, LOL!:D
