Poll question: Best Beatles Cover Ever:
Tales from the warped side: The gems one comes across while burning one's old rare LPs to MP3...

THIS IS NOT DEBATEABLE, PEOPLE. I am listening to Xaviera Hollander (the Happy Hooker)'s second(!) album, and hs edoes a torch version of the Beatles' "Michelle".

There has never been a better tribute to the Beatles' works. In fact, I can say without hyperbole, that this is the best cover version of anything, ever. In fact, it's one hundred trillion times better than Nick Drake's "Know", as performed by the Happy Flowers.

And that's saying ahelluvalot!

2. Ever heard either of these?

Tina Turner's torch-song remake of "Help."
Stevie Wonder's funkification of "We Can Work It Out."

Admittedly, I've never heard the Xaviera Hollander track, but it'll have to be pretty damned good to beat out those two!

By the way, wasn't Xaviera Hollander the infamous Happy Hooker?

4. NO! NO DEBATE!
I have heard the Stevie Wonder version, but not the Tina Turner version.

I can say, confidently, that this one whomps all.

I think that version of "Don't Let Me Down" ia by Paul Weller. It's excellent. BUT NOT AS GOOD AS THE HAPPY HOOKER!!

15. A Yugoslavian Industrial band (Laibach) did the entire Let It Be album...
It's pretty incredible. And their version of Across the Universe is a masterpiece of choir arrangement...

But it's no "Michelle"!

9. NONONONO!
Maybe the Breeders, and maybe Spore's "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", come close, but...

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

You have GOT to hear this. It begins with a 10 minute (!) long quasi-phone sex date between Hollander and a woman named "Michelle". She says "groovy" at least six times during the sex. Then the horns kick in. Imagine the band in the gay S&M cigar lounge Bruce Wayne would take Dick Greyson to on their night off---that's the horn seciotn.

She half whispers/half warbles the lyrics completely out of step with the band, hitting dizzying crescendos which would make Lotte Lenya and Diamanda Galas vomit in futile frustration.

OH MY GOD. ALL HAIL XAVIERA HOLLANDER!

21. The real question is :How many "artists" killed their careers with.....
awful Beatles covers....

First of all, there was the Bee Gees & Frampton and that horrid piece of shit movie they did. Frampton never recovered from that. The Bee Gees only had a semi-comeback in recent years because people refuse to let disco remain dead and buried.

Aerosmith - did one song in the horrible movie (which wasn't actually a bad cover) and promptly began their slide downhill. Recovered briefly in the mid 80's before degenerating into the world's oldest boyband.

Tiffany - I saw him standing there?? Uh, I don't think so.

Michael Jackson - He didn't even cover any of the songs, he just bought 'em. And his life promptly went straight to Hell.

Anybody think of any other deserving casualties??

25. The best Beatles cover is actually by...
Severed Heads. His cover of "Baby you're a rich man" is without a doubt the creme de la creme of Beatles covers.

This Japanese band I saw in Fukuoka did an amazing version of "Across the Universe", very psychedelic.
