DU: A chosen family in cyberspace
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 12:23 PM by prolesunited
Just an observation. I checked in today just for a quick update and I find Mari333's heart-breaking tribute to her husband in GD and the tragic news that Cuban Liberal has lost his nephew in Iraq.

I find myself sitting here crying, shedding tears for people I don't really "know" and probably will never meet. But, it makes perfect sense as I realize that we have created a family here in cyberspace.

We have shared pieces of our lives, dreams and frustrations with each other. Births of babies, deaths of relatives, job promotions and financial losses. We offer support and advice when people are confronted with illness and a shoulder to cry one when life's road gets tough. Silliness and humor blunt the rough edges.

Sure, we fight and bicker and some of us don't even really like each other, but underneath it all we have come together in this struggle and are truly there for one another. It truly is an amazing thing.

I just want to express my appreciation to everyone for being here and being there for each other. Your kindness and compassion restores my faith in humanity every day and is a true refuge in the craziness around us.

4. You are not the only one shedding tears
this afternoon for people that you have never met in person. My heart goes out to both Mari and Cuban Lib.

And you are so right about our community. I am somewhat isolated here as far as my beliefs go, and DU is an inspiration.

5. Oh no!
I knew about Mari333's husband but I had no idea about Cuban Liberal's nephew...damn.

I agree, DU really is like a family. Sometimes we fight and get on each other's nerves but when it comes down to it, we're there for each other when it counts. Isn't that what family is all about?

It's one of the things that keeps me coming back to this place.

6. Not to forget, Surfermaw's daughter passed away this week
I feel like all these people are personal friends, even though I've never met a single one of them. I share their humanity and feel their loss.

8. Definitely true for me
Not to mention some of the most important people in my life came from DU and bonded themselves to my heart in the very brief relative time I have been here.

~ My Friends ~

I consider you my friend, although
we've never met-
You've managed to touch my heart
Through this thing called "The Net".

You've been there for me when I've
needed someone-
How can I ever thank you for all
that you've done?

When I've needed a shoulder, a prayer,
a hug or an ear
You have been there for me like
we've been friends for years

I don't quite understand it us meeting
as cyber-friends
But I feel that God had a hand in it
In order for me to mend.

I prefer not to use it- this term
"cyber-friend"
I'll leave off the "cyber"and just
call you friend.

I feel I must thank you for showering
me with love-
My angels right here on earth sent
from Heaven above.
"Thank YOU for being my friend."

14. What a beautiful post!
I wanted to scream this morning this morning, a primal scream of pain and anger and frustration, and the only place I could do that was here at DU. I knew the people here would understand, and if the folks who understand you and love you aren't 'family', then the word has no meaning. Thank you, DU, for being a place of refuge.
