Master and Commander- Really Bad Movie
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 07:32 AM by Demman
Was it written just for his ego. I clapped when it was over

Or am I just picky?

1. Have you read any of O'Brien's books?
He was perfect for the part. O'Brien's "Lucky Jack" Aubry had a huge ego, too...

I must confess, though, I saw it only once. :-)

4. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Except, however, for the amputation part, because that kid looks exactly like my son. :(

I thought Crowe caught Aubrey's personality very well.

I'm now plowing my way through the books, which are amazing.

5. The movie didn't come close to being as good as the books, but
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 07:55 AM by MercutioATC
what movie does?

That said, I liked it. If the "he" you're talking about is Russell Crowe, I'd agree with the other posters here. He fit the part.

Paul Bettany did a good job, but didn't fit the physical description of Stephen Maturin at all.

I think the movie held true to the books as far as the nautical scenes. It lacked the "shore time" that the books had, however, and character development suffered because of it.

13. Movies that are better than the books they're based on:
Fight Club (barely)
The Godfather
Star Wars (actually was a book first)
Forrest Gump (one of the worst books I've ever read)

There are more, but I can't think of any right now...

16. You got me! (I didn't read any of those books)
I guess there ARE some movies that are better than the book.

6. I was really disappointed by it
I like Russell Crowe and expected a lot from this one but I just don't think it delivered.

7. You're just too picky
I thought it was a great movie...not too many serious historic movies anymore and that was one of them. What disappointed me was the low box office which makes it unlikely there will be anymore made in this series.

9. I liked it enough to say
that it could have easily been my choice for Best Picture this year over LOTR. Actually, it would have been #2 behind Mystic River. I mean no disrespect because I thoroughly enjoyed them, but thank god LOTR is done.

11. I felt it was not so much a movie...
...as a trailer for a series of them.

And then I got depressed, because good as it was, it didn't do LOTR numbers, and that means the others won't now get made.

I had the same experience I had during LOTR, where there were scenes in the movie that were exactly the way I pictured them when reading the books. This is a most disconcerting feeling, like some stranger's been rummaging through your head.

12. I thought it was a tremendous film.
Crowe was charming and engaging. Paul Bettany was great as the doctor. And that little blond Lord Whoever just broke my heart with his courage. Great story.

15. I thought the book was crappy - one of only a few books I could not
finish. I finish nearly every book I start - even bad ones - but that one just didn't do anything for me and I dropped it as a waste of time.
