What's your favorite Phish song?
I'm looking for good downloads and trying to jar my memory.

For me, my favorite is Farmhouse, followed by Sample In A Jar.

Thanks!

:hi:

3. Oh man oh man
I can definitly tell you're a "newb" to Phish. I am a hardcore Phishhead. I have about 90 of their shows all total.

My favorite songs of theirs? Where do I start?

You Enjoy Myself
Divided Sky
Harry Hood
David Bowie
Curtain With
Mike's Song
Ghost
Down with Disease
Weekapaug Groove
Simple
Piper

I guess it really depends on what you like. I LOVE LOVE LOVE jams (and NO i don't do drugs lol.) Here are my top five Phish shows of all time.

6/11/94
6/22/94
11/17/97
12/14/95
4/3/98

If you know how to use BitTorrent (very easy), you can download a TON of great shows here http://bt.etree.org/

I would also recommended the Live Phish series of CD's. There are twenty in total. They all sound excellent and were all picked out by the band themselves.

7. So, turn a 47-year old Dead head into whatever Phish fans are called
Where do I begin? Any specific record?

I keep hearing about Phish but I'm an old fogie (to some extent) who is stuck in his ways.

I am a Dead fan because of my love for traditional music (Celtic and its American derivatives) and for jazz. So, am I a potential Phish lover?

9. Yep.
My dh is a big deadhead (he's just a couple of years younger than you are). When Jerry passed away, dh was interviewed in our local big-city paper. I don't know why he got the call, but whatever.

Anyway, at the time he said that Phish would be the new band to take over for the Dead. The few Phish shows I attended had a lot of the same crowd as the Dead shows.

I loved their vacuum cleaner song. It was always entertaining, but it was one of those that you'd have to check out live in concert. Since they've just stopped touring....

I don't have any specific recommendation for you, as I don't share the same undying love for the Dead or Phish. They're okay.... but...

12. Like the Dead, it's good to start with some of their studio stuff
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 02:58 PM by Taverner
Just to get an idea of where they're "going" with their jams. I reccomend some of their early studio albums, "Junta", "Picture of Nectar" or "Lawn Boy". "Hoist" is also a good call.

Then check out some of their live downloads. Like the Dead, each show would have a totally different feel and texture, and are the subject of much debate among the Phish community. My favorite live show was 6.22.94 (Live Phish 10). I wasn't there, but the jams they do on that album are AMAZING - especially during the second set. I also love their final show before hiatus at the Shoreline, but a lot of Phish fans thought that show was sub par so...like I said, everyone has a favorite show - unlike the Dead where pretty much everyone can agree on 5.8.77 (or 1977 in general.)

Keep in mind the band carries the same spirit of the Dead, but the music is very different. As the Dead cut their teeth on the music of baby boom, post-war America (blues, folk, bluegrass, jazz) Phish cut their teeth on the music of suburban middle-class, 60's/70's America (psychedelic rock, arena rock...Boston, LedZep, Floyd...etc)

They don't incorporate so much traditional music into their shows, but a LOT of jazz. You can see heavy influences from Zappa, Miles Davis and Yes in their work as well.

Think of them as the next step of evolution in music as found art...

13. Hmmmm. Zappa, Miles, Yes. Those are some hot buttons for me
Actually, I think I was drawn into the Dead by Europe '72, then got into the studio stuff of the same period.

The only Phish at the local library is a 10 CD set (I think 10) of live shows, so I have have to start there.

Thanks for the tips.

10. The Mango Song
Always gets me dancin', and one of their few tunes that works better in the studio than it does live...
