For prescription sunglasses, what would you do?
I am somewhat nearsighted with astigmatism.

I will be getting a new pair of sunglasses.

Would you go for generic frames or designer frames?

Also, would you get the cheap plastic lenses, spend $70 on better polycabonate lenses, or spend an extra $150 and go for the aspherical top quality polycarbonate that significantly reduces distortion?

Thanks!

1. When I saw how the price has increased so much...
I found a pair of clip-ons. They look good -- they are exactly the same size as my regular glasses and attach with brackets. I pull the lenses apart, stretching the springs, then fit the brackets around my glasses. Cost $15 -- a lot cheaper than new prescription sunglasses.

2. check out the designer frames available on ebay.

I haven't gotten just frames on ebay so I don't know if you get a hassle when you bring your own (new) frames to an optician for lenses.

I have gotten new designer $250.00 retail non-prescription sunglasses for less than $50.00 on ebay.

You always need to confirm the frames or sunglasses are your measurments (size) before bidding.

4. I'd spring for the best available, just cuz I like to see clearly and not
get a headache or eyestrain.

BUT...I totally use good clip-ons on my regular glasses just like the person above does.

5. sunglasses
Seven years ago I had cataract surgery. Since then, I have to use reading glasses because everything closer than about 18 inches is blurry. For distance my left eye needs a correction of lrss than .25 so my doctor said to just use reading glasses. But I like to go fishing and it was a hassle trying to tie knots. I ended up at the Wal-mart eyeglass shop and got basic metal rim frames for $18 and the bifocal lenses with tinting were $60 more. I couldn't see spending a lot on glasses that I might drop in the bay. My wife goes for the designer frames and expensive lenses and loses at least one pair a year. It costs her about 4 times what I spent and I stll have the cheap ones I bought 6 years ago.

7. Ray bans. Worn them for years, tougher than a tank, very stylish,
lots of designs to choose from and made in the USA. May I mention I ride a Harley so I really need durable frames, and these have never disappointed. Had a pair I wore in a nasty MC wreck, I suffered some fairly serious injuries but the glasses (and the bike) were fine.

8. That's What I Did
Went to one of the discounter/wholesale stores like CostCo (this was back in the '80s, the glasses are long since gone) and got a pair of RayBans dirt cheap, then had the lenses made to fit.
